Cost, Convenience, and Risk: Should You Import from Alibaba or Buy Locally

in Kenya?
Introduction
As global e-commerce platforms continue to expand, Kenyan consumers and business
owners now face a strategic decision: whether to source products directly from
international suppliers such as [Link] or to purchase them through local
vendors. While importing may offer lower unit costs and access to a wider range of
products, it also involves complex logistics, regulatory compliance, and potential
risks. On the other hand, buying locally provides greater convenience, faster delivery,
and simplified transactions. This article provides a comparative analysis of both
options to support informed decision-making for individuals and businesses seeking
cost-effective and efficient procurement solutions.

What is [Link]?
[Link] is a global online marketplace operated by the Alibaba Group. It
connects manufacturers, suppliers, and wholesalers. It was established in 1999 and it
serves as a platform where buyers can access a wide array of good ranging from
electronics, apparel, machinery, to consumer goods. While it mainly focuses on
B2B(business to business), consumers can also access the goods. Unlike consumer
based platforms like AliExpress that caters to individual buyers, [Link] is
designed for businesses looking to purchase in bulk, often for resale or manufacturing
purposes. International trade is well catered for by trade assurance, secure payment
options , and a comprehensive supplier verification system. All these features aim to
mitigate risks associated with cross-border transactions and ensure a more secure and
efficient sourcing process.
On the platform, buyers can directly communicate with the seller to request
quotations and negotiate terms like minimum order, custom branding and shipping
arrangements.
Shipping prices vary with fragility, size, weight and mode of transport.

1. Cost Efficiency and Total Expenditure

 Importing via Alibaba
While the costs displayed on Alibaba website are fairly if not very low compared to
local prices, one has to consider the expenses of importation. The question though still
remains: is the total expenditure of importation plus the cost of the item less that of
the local price? To answer the question the actual cost of importation is to be
calculated. What costs are incurred for the package to be delivered home?
The landed cost of goods is inclusive of the following charges depending on mode of
transport (air or water):
 International shipping prices: International freight charges vary widely based
on size, weight, and urgency of the shipment. Air freight offers faster delivery but
comes at a premium, often calculated per kilogram. Sea freight is more
economical for bulk cargo but involves longer lead times.
