Exercise 1: Fill in the Blanks
Complete the sentences using can, is/are able to, could, or was/were able to:
1. When I was five, I ________ swim across the small pool.
2. My brother ________ speak three languages fluently.
3. Last week, she had a difficult test, but she ________ pass it.
4. Now that I practice every day, I ________ play the guitar much better.
5. In high school, Jake ________ run five miles without stopping.
6. Despite the heavy rain, the team ________ finish the game.
7. Anna ________ bake delicious cakes since she was young.
8. Before the storm, they ________ prepare emergency supplies.
9. The new student ________ understand English quite well.

Exercise 2: Sentence Transformation
Rewrite each sentence in a different form using another modal for ability.
Example:
💡 Original: My grandmother could sew beautiful dresses.
✅ Transformed: My grandmother was able to sew beautiful dresses.
Now, try these:
1. Sarah is able to solve difficult math problems easily.
2. When Mark was a teenager, he could ride a horse well.
3. Despite feeling nervous, Emma was able to give a great speech.
4. Our coach can guide us to victory.
5. Last year, I was able to learn how to paint landscapes.
Exercise 3: Creative Writing
🔹 Instructions: Write a short paragraph about a skill or ability you have. Use at least three
different modals for ability (can, is/are able to, could, was/were able to).
💡 Example Response:
"I love playing the piano. I can perform many songs from memory. When I was younger, I could
only play simple melodies, but after years of practice, I am able to play difficult pieces with
confidence. Last month, I had stage fright, but I was able to perform in front of a crowd
successfully."
