Title: Exploring Academic Reliance on ChatGPT Among 2 nd Year Education
Students at PhilCST
A. CHAPTER 1: THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
1.1 INTRODUCTION
1.2 The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in educational settings
has significantly transformed the landscape of learning and teaching.
Among the various AI applications. ChatGPT developed by OpenAI has
garnered attention for its ability to generate human-like text and assist
with a range of academic tasks. As educational institutions increasingly
adopt digital tools to enhance learning experiences, understanding the
extent and impact of academic reliance on AI technologies like ChatGPT
becomes crucial.
Philippine College of Science and Technology (PhilCST) is at the forefront of
this digital transformation, with students leveraging ChatGPT for various
academic purposes. From drafting essays to solving complex problems, the
use of ChatGPT has become increasingly prevalent among education
students. However, this reliance on AI raises important questions about its
effects on academic performance, learning outcomes, and the development
of critical thinking skills.
This study aims to explore the academic reliance on ChatGPT among
education students at PhilCST, especially the 2 nd Years as they are the target
respondents on this research. By examining the frequency and nature of
ChatGPT use, as well as the perceived benefits and potential disadvantages
or negative impacts, this research seeks to provide a comprehensive
understanding of how AI tools are shaping the academic experiences of
future educators.
Furthermore, the study will investigate the implications of this reliance for
educational practices and policy development within the institution. By
examining these aspects, the research will contribute to the broader
discourse on AI in education, offering insights that can inform the integration
of such technologies in a manner that enhances learning while mitigating
potential risks. This introduction sets the stage for a thorough investigation
into the evolving dynamics of AI-assisted learning and its impact on the
academic landscape at PhilCST.
1.3 THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The study starts by creating a survey for second-year education students at
the Philippine College of Science and Technology (PhilCST) to learn how they
use ChatGPT. The survey will ask how often and how they use ChatGPT for
school, their thoughts on its benefits and drawbacks, and their
understanding of ethical issues. This survey will be sent out by email and
online platforms. Once we collect the responses, we will analyze the data to
find patterns and impacts on their academic performance. We will keep
everything ethical by ensuring students’ consent, anonymity, and data
protection. The results will show how students use ChatGPT, its effects on
their grades and learning, their opinions on its advantages and
disadvantages, and their awareness of ethical issues. Based on these results,
we will suggest ways to use ChatGPT effectively in school and provide
guidelines to handle ethical concerns. We will share our findings through
reports, presentations, and publications to help educators and policymakers.
1.5 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1.6
The objective of this study is to investigate the degree and effects of
academic dependency on ChatGPT among second-year education students
at the Philippine College of Science and Technology (PhilCST). It specifically
aims to answer the following questions:
1. How frequently are second-year education students at PhilCST utilizing
ChatGPT for academic purposes such as assignments, research, and exam
preparation?
2. What benefits and disadvantages do these students perceive in their use
of ChatGPT?
3. In what ways does ChatGPT usage impact the academic performance and
learning experiences of second-year education students at PhilCST?
4. What ethical issues do students identify when using ChatGPT, and how do
they manage potential challenges related to academic integrity?
1.5 HYPOTHESIS/HYPOTHESES OF THE STUDY
The second-year education students at the Philippine College of Science and
Technology (PhilCST) who often use ChatGPT for their schoolwork will see
both big advantages and some disadvantages. This use will affect their
academic performance and learning in different ways, and they will be aware
of the ethical issues related to using ChatGPT.
1.7 SCOPE AND DELIMITATION ✓
1.8 This study aims to investigate the utilization of ChatGPT among 2 nd
year education students at PhilCST. Specifically, it will explore the
frequency and contexts in which students rely on ChatGPT for academic
support, assess the effectiveness of ChatGPT in assisting with their
educational needs, and examine the perceptions of students regarding
the impact of ChatGPT on their learning experiences. The study will be
conducted over a specified time frame, focusing on a particular academic
year or semester
The study will focus on a specific group within PhilCST, namely 2 nd-year
education students, thus limiting the scope to this particular academic
cohort. The time frame of the study will be confined to a specific academic
year or semester, ensuring a clear temporal boundary for data collection and
analysis. Furthermore, the study will concentrate specifically on students
enrolled in the education department at PhilCST, providing a focused
exploration within this academic domain. To maintain rigor, potential biases
or limitations associated with the use of ChatGPT will be acknowledged and
thoroughly addressed within the study, ensuring a comprehensive
examination of the topic.

1.9 DEFINITIONS OF TERMS
CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
B. CHAPTER 3: RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES
3.1 RESEARCH METHOD/DESIGN ✓
We used a quantitative research design to collect and analyze data
systematically. A survey questionnaire will serve as the primary data
collection tool, specifically targeting second-year education students at
PhilCST. This method allows for the quantification of various aspects, such as
the frequency, types, and perceived effects of ChatGPT usage on academic
activities. The use of closed-ended questions will facilitate the collection of
measurable data, enabling statistical analysis to uncover patterns and
correlations. This approach ensures objectivity and provides a detailed
understanding of how students depend on ChatGPT for their academic
endeavors.
3.2 POPULATION AND SAMPLES OF THE STUDY ✓
This study will be conducted at Philippine College of Science and Technology
specifically the Second (2nd) year Students of College of Education. The
population was selected through the use of criterion sampling. Criterion
sampling is a purposive sampling technique where participants are chosen
based on specific predetermined criteria essential to the research. For the
study "Exploring Academic Reliance on ChatGPT Among 2 nd Year Education
Students at PhilCST.”, the criteria would be: (1) students must be in their
second year of education studies, (2) students must be enrolled at PhilCST,
and (3) students must have used ChatGPT for academic purposes.
3.3 DATA COLLECTION INSTRUMENTS ✓
To collect data for the study “Exploring Academic Reliance on ChatGPT
Among 2nd Year Education Students at PhilCST,” we designed and distributed
a survey questionnaire to the target group. This questionnaire sought to
obtain detailed information about the students’ demographics, their
frequency and methods of using ChatGPT, the perceived effects on their
academic performance, and any ethical considerations. It included both
closed-ended questions for quantitative data and open-ended questions for
qualitative insights. This approach ensures a thorough understanding of how
second-year education students at PhilCST are integrating ChatGPT into their
academic work, revealing their dependence on this AI tool and its impact on
their educational experience.
3.4 DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES
To gather data for this study, we will give a survey questionnaire to second-
year education students at the Philippine College of Science and Technology
(PhilCST). First, we will create a survey with both multiple-choice and open-
ended questions to collect information on how often and how much students
use ChatGPT, as well as their thoughts on its benefits, drawbacks, and
ethical concerns. The survey will be sent out electronically using school email
lists and learning platforms to reach as many students as possible easily.
Before they take the survey, students will be informed about the study’s
purpose, assured that their answers will be anonymous, and asked for their
consent. The survey will be available for a set time, with reminders sent to
encourage more students to participate. After the survey closes, we will
compile and analyze the responses to find trends and key insights related to
the study’s goals.
3.5 DATA ANALYSIS/STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA
