Chapter 6

1-What did Grizzle return with one day?


He returned with a female animal that looked very much like
him.
2-What did they do to calm the frightened animal?
To comfort the frightened animal, they tied Grizzle nearby and
left them for the night.
3-How did they tame the onager?
Father jumped on the onager's back and bit down on her ear.

4-How did they have shelter in winter?


They covered the vaulted roots of their tree, making the frame
from bamboo canes. They used clay and mass to fill the open
spaces. Then they covered the whole thing with a mixture of
tar and lime water. They divided the area into several parts.
Now, under one root, they had dry places for themselves and
all the animals. All they had yet to do was store the food. They
worked day after day bringing in ripe food of all kinds. They
collected potatoes, coconuts, sweet acorns and Sugar canes.

5-What did they do to make use of their boring time in winter?


Winter was long and boring. In the mornings, they took care of
the animals. The boys took care of their pets. They'd made lots
of wax candies earlier, so they could light up their room at
night. Father wrote a journal of all the adventures they'd had
since being shipwrecked. Mother was kept busy sewing.
clothes for all of them. Ermest made sketches of the birds,
beasts and flowers on the island. Fritz and Jack taught little
Franz to read.

6-How did they find their tent house after winter?


It was ruined. The canvas had blown down and been
ripped into rags. The supplies we had left there were soaked.

7-What did Fritz do to keep their supplies safe?


Fritz suggested that they hollow out a big cave in the rock.
They could put some of their supplies there.

8-What did they do to change the stale air into safe?


Fire is the safest way to restore this place to its clean state, he
told them. They lit some hay and threw in the cavern. When
the fire went out, the air was safe to breathe.

10-What were their homes in both summer and winter?


They soon decided to use Falcon's Nest as a summer home
and the salt cave as their winter home.

Rock House.
