“Savoring Solutions: The Healing Power of Food”

By: Markus Sebastian S. Calva

The food we consume directly affects our own health, and that is undeniable. Each
meal and snack we eat impacts our health crucially. Though, in the middle of the
complexity of our modern lives, we often overlook the actual significance our
dietary choices have on us and our health. In our daily lives, we often encounter
challenges that affect our well-being negatively. These challenges may seem
uneventful and not cause much harm, but over time, these effects will greatly
impact the quality of our lives.
One of the most common, yet overlooked challenges is the problem of
inconsistent energy levels throughout the day. Many of us experience a burst and a
sudden drop of energy, which is often a result of caffeine reliance or snacks that
possess sugar. Consuming sugary foods and processed goods may also lead to
these energy crashes and even a feeling of lethargy or lifelessness. A solution to
this would be to change up your food intake and opt for nutrient-dense foods like
fruits and vegetables to provide our body with sustained energy throughout the
day.
Another problem we face is stress and anxiety. Stress is prevalent, whether
as a kid playing around, a teenager in school, or an adult working a job. It is
practically unavoidable, with many of us handling multiple obligations
simultaneously. Although stress is a natural response to life’s challenges, excessive
stress will destroy our mental state, which leads to the neglection of our physical
needs. One way to combat this problem is to eat foods that contain nutrients and
minerals, such as fiber, zinc, and vitamins A, E, and C to help lessen the effects of
stress. Nuts have also been found to contain Omega-3 acids, which can help
mitigate the impact of stress to our mind.
Digestive complications are yet another source of difficulty that many of us
individuals have to deal with. Ranging from bloating, to constipation and
indigestion, these issues are uncomfortable to deal with, embarrassing to have, and
are disruptive to our everyday lives. It may be evident, but what we eat is also a
significant factor in our overall digestive health, influencing various bacteria and the
efficiency of digestion. One solution to this annoying issue is to consume a fiber-rich
diet, as doing so increases the weight and size of your stool and softens it. A bulky
stool is easier to pass, decreasing your chance of constipation. Some foods that
contain dietary fiber are whole grain foods, like whole wheat bread and oatmeal,
legumes, such as black beans, fruits, including apples and oranges, and vegetables.
Many of us also experience constant mood swings and a never-ending
change of our mental well-being. Stress, issues with relationships, even being
disturbed while we sleep can greatly impact our emotional state, leaving us feeling
irritated, anxious, or depressed. While no food can truly cure mental health
disorders, it can at least positively influence our mood and help build emotional
toughness. Foods such as leafy greens, dark chocolate, and berries may help
combat stress in the brain, as they contain antioxidants. Moreover, complex
carbohydrates from whole foods (like sweet potatoes, rolled oats, beans and
quinoa) can increase availability of the feel-good chemical serotonin in our brain.
To summarize, the food we consume certainly has a significant impact on
our health, from energy levels and stress management, to digestive health and
mood swings. By being aware of what we consume and what we choose to prioritize
in our diet, we can prevent problems such as poor sleep quality, a weak immune
system, low libido, and weak muscle recovery from ever rising and growing into
more serious issues that become much more difficult to mitigate and solve.

Awareness of dietary habits allows individuals to identify and prevent health issues by making informed choices, focusing on nutrient-rich foods that support overall health. Areas for improvement include ensuring consistent energy levels by avoiding sugar and caffeine reliance, managing stress with nutrient-dense foods, and supporting digestion with fiber consumption—all which contribute to better health outcomes .

Stress is a natural response to challenges, but when excessive, it impairs mental health and leads to neglect of physical needs, exacerbating health issues. Diet can be part of the solution by incorporating stress-reducing nutrients like Omega-3s and antioxidants found in nuts, leafy greens, and dark chocolate, which help mitigate stress impacts and support mental resilience .

Dietary fiber plays a crucial role in digestive health by increasing the weight and size of stool and softening it, which makes it easier to pass and reduces the chance of constipation. Recommended fiber-rich foods include whole grain foods such as whole wheat bread and oatmeal, legumes like black beans, and fruits and vegetables such as apples and oranges .

Reliance on caffeine and sugary snacks often causes short-term bursts of energy followed by sharp declines, resulting in inconsistent energy levels and feelings of fatigue. Recommended alternatives include consuming nutrient-dense foods such as fruits and vegetables, which provide sustained energy release without the crashes associated with high sugar intake .

To combat inconsistent energy levels, incorporating nutrient-dense foods like fruits and vegetables into your diet is important. These foods provide sustained energy throughout the day, unlike sugary foods and processed goods that lead to energy crashes and feelings of lethargy. Nutrients from fruits and vegetables support consistent energy release, avoiding the peaks and troughs associated with high sugar intake .

Dietary choices can prevent long-term health problems by providing the necessary nutrients that support bodily functions and immune responses. For example, a diet rich in vitamins and minerals can strengthen the immune system, while avoiding excessive sugar and processed food prevents energy crashes that could lead to poor sleep quality. Nutrients supporting serotonin help regulate sleep cycles, while antioxidants combat oxidative stress, contributing to overall stronger health .

Diet influences emotional well-being by providing nutrients that support brain function and mood regulation. Foods like leafy greens, which are rich in antioxidants, and complex carbohydrates from whole foods like sweet potatoes and quinoa can support serotonin production, enhancing mood stability. The complexities of modern life often lead to overlooked dietary significance, resulting in poor choices that affect health negatively. Individuals can prioritize their diets by being mindful of nutrient-rich food intake over convenience foods. This includes choosing whole foods to provide consistent energy, using nutrients to manage stress, and supporting digestion with fiber-rich diets .

Nutrient intake directly influences mood by providing the raw materials for neurotransmitter production, such as serotonin. Foods high in complex carbohydrates enhance serotonin availability, thereby stabilizing mood. Antioxidant-rich foods reduce oxidative stress, positively impacting mood fluctuations. Therefore, adjusting diets to include these can aid in mood stabilization .
