Probability Analysis of Commuting Choices

The document presents two probability problems involving travel scenarios. The first problem involves a cyclist navigating traffic lights with given probabilities for green lights, while the second problem involves a commuter choosing between different modes of transportation with associated probabilities of being late. Solutions to both problems are provided, including calculations for combined probabilities and conditional probabilities.

1. Nurlisa travels to work on her bicycle. She has to go through two

sets of traffic lights on her way. At the first set of lights, the
probability that they will be green is 7/10. At the second set the
probability that they will be green is 3/5
a. What is that probability that both sets will be green?
b. What is the probability that she will have to stop once and only
once at a set of lights?

ANS: (a) 0.42 (b) 0.46

2. Alifah Ilyana goes to work using one of the three transportation,

that is by bus, motorcycle or car. The probability that she chooses
to go by bus 1/5 or by motocycle is 7/10. The probabilities that
she is late for work if she goes by bus, motorcycle and car are 1/6,
1/30 and ¼ respectively.
(a) Construct a tree diagram.
(b) Find the probability that Alifah Ilyana is late for work.
(c) Given that she goes to work on time, what is the probability
that she goes by motorcycle?

ANS: (a) (b) 49/600 (c) 14/19
