Application of Liquid
Bitumen in substructure
1. Purpose

The aim of this Method Statement is to provide and maintain effective quality control
procedures and to execute the work in compliance to standard and good practice at all stages
and activities for Water Proofing works of Bituminous Protective Coating.

2. Scope

This method statement covers the application of liquid bitumen waterproofing system for
substructure elements like P.C.C, foundations, & retaining walls to prevent water ingress.

3. Materials

Materials used include:

• Liquid Bitumen
• Cleaning materials

4. Tools & Equipment

• Brush/roller/squeegee for application

• Spray equipment
• Wire Brush
• Empty Container/Drums
• Stirrer/Rod
• Wheel Barrow
• Safety gear (PPE)
• Trowels or putty knives

5. Material Storage

• Materials shall be stored in a cool place and avoid putting in direct sun light.
• Materials shall be placed in a way to avoid the direct contact with ground soil.
• Materials shall not be exposed to the fire or naked flames in any circumstances.
• The materials damaged during transportation, handling or storing shall not be used at site.

Method statement for
Application of Liquid
Bitumen in substructure
6. Surface Preparation

• Surface / substrate preparation is the most important for Bituminous Protective coating before
application.
• The concrete surface / substrate shall be clean and free from contamination such as dust, oil,
grease, organic growth and release agents etc.
• The surface shall be free from standing water.
• All loosely adhering particles such as rust, mortar and cement laitance shall be removed.
• The surface would be cleaned by wire or stiff brushing and finally soft brushing or compressed
air.
• Cracks greater than 1.6mm wide shall be rout out.
• The substrate condition shall be approved by the client prior to start application.

7. Application Procedure

i. Primer Application:

Prime coat is not normally required (as per manufacturer’s recommendations) however if the
substrate is particularly porous or bubble holes are there, then diluted Liquid Bitumen with up
to 10% potable water shall be applied with brush or roller in a continuous uniform coating.
Allow drying time for minimum 3 hours to proceed for next coat.

ii. Liquid Bitumen Application:

• Two coats of Bituminous Protective Coating shall be done under competent personnel’s
supervision and as per manufacturer’s recommendations.
• The material will be stirred thoroughly to mix any solid materials that may have settled at the
bottom of the packing, until a homogeneous consistency is achieved.
• After thorough mixing, first coat Liquid Bitumen shall be applied with brushes or rollers in a
continuous uniform coating.
• At least 4 hours drying time shall be allowed between the coats.
• Second coat shall be applied in the same manner.
• Adequate ventilation shall be provided (if required)
• Application of water proofing system shall be done by experienced and competent personnel.

Method statement for
Application of Liquid
Bitumen in substructure
• Unauthorized entry shall be restricted to the waterproofing areas.
• Prior to concealing of the waterproofing inspection shall be raised for consultant approval. All
subsequent works shall be carried out only after getting written approval.

8. Curing & Protection

Ensure curing time is respected before backfilling or any further work. Protect the
waterproofing layer from heavy traffic, or sharp objects.

9. Inspection & Quality Control

Check for uniform coverage and thickness. Ensure no pinholes, bubbles, or cracks. Keep
records of batch numbers and application dates.

Check with the Consultant Engineer along with the Contractor engineer for the Bitumen
Coating before processing to the next Stage.

10. Health and Safety

Use PPE including gloves, masks, and goggles. Ensure good ventilation during application,
especially for solvent-based products. Fire safety protocols must be followed if hot-applied
bitumen is used. Proper disposal of containers and cleaning materials
