Sesame Pollination Methods in Summer

The study investigates the pollination methods using female parents in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) during summer, focusing on floral morphology and pollination requirements. It identifies optimal times for hand pollination and highlights the significant role of honey bees in cross-pollination, with G-TIL 10 showing the highest stigma receptivity and seed setting. The findings indicate that sesame can self-pollinate or cross-pollinate, depending on the conditions and timing of pollination.

ABSTRACT
The experiment was based on genetic architecture of seed yield and its components in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)
over environment. In this sesame floral morphology and pollination requirements of Sesamum in Amreli condition during
summer 2015 in this used 4 female parents namely., AT-285 ,G TIL-1 ,G TIL-10 and R-T-54 with hand pollination for
stigma receptivity. In addition, I examined floral morphology and pollination requirements of sesamum at Agricultural
Research Station ,JAU, Amreli , Gujarat and consisted of two modes: floral morphology and pollination requirements.
Flowers were observed as for time of dehiscence, anther longevity and stigma receptivity capacity, and were applied to
pollination treatments: open pollination, hand cross-pollination, hand self- pollination, and pollination restricted with
small paper bags. In this observed, sesamum have a somewhat mixed- pollination system, because it can produce
seed whatever the type of pollination was made on filed. In sesame highest stigma receptivity was highest observed in
G-TIL 10 which capsule seed setting highest observed in different stage of morning time. Honey bee play magnificent

Sesamum (Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the ancient transfer desirable characteristics such as drought
and important oilseed crops grown next to cotton and tolerance and resistance to diseases and pest, from wild
groundnut in Gujarat. Sesamum can grow well in Amreli, relatives into cultivated Sesamum (Carlsson et al., 2008).

Different pollination methods show variation in seed setting. Free pollination results in the highest seed setting with a 96% capsule set, indicating that biotic pollinators play a crucial role. Hand pollination (geitonogamy) and hand cross-pollination show good seed setting but are less effective than free pollination. Pollination restricted with a small paper bag shows the lowest seed setting at 55%, although it indicates the possibility of self-pollination .

The genetic architecture of seed yield components in Sesamum indicum involves complex interactions with environmental conditions. The study examines various genetic traits such as stigma receptivity and capsule setting across different environmental contexts. It highlights that environmental factors like temperature and humidity, in conjunction with genetic predispositions, can significantly affect seed yield outcomes .

The study underscores that effective pollination strategies must adapt to environmental conditions to optimize seed yield. By analyzing different pollination methods and times, the results demonstrate that specific strategies, like targeting periods of peak stigma receptivity, can lead to higher productivity. This adaptability ensures better outcomes across varying ecological settings, highlighting the necessity for tailored pollination approaches in agriculture .

The findings on mixed pollination suggest that both self-pollination and cross-pollination strategies should be considered in agricultural practices for oilseed crops. Promoting conditions that support cross-pollination, such as encouraging pollinator presence, can enhance genetic diversity and bolster seed yields. This mixed strategy can lead to more resilient crop systems in varying environmental conditions .

The sesamum flower's stigma is most receptive from the morning until approximately 10:30 a.m., with peak receptivity between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. Beyond 10:30 a.m., the stigma becomes dry and withers, decreasing pollination success. This change implies that timely pollination is essential for maximizing seed set. The rapid decline in receptivity necessitates understanding and leveraging pollination within the optimal time window .

The timing of pollination is crucial for optimal seed setting in sesame cultivation. The study identifies the hours between 7:00 and 9:30 a.m. as the period of highest stigma receptivity. Pollination during this time achieves the best results in seed setting, with peak receptivity facilitating effective pollen transfer and fertilization. After 9:30 a.m., the receptivity declines, leading to reduced pollination success rate .

Honey bees are considered important pollinators for Sesamum indicum as they enhance cross-pollination, thus increasing seed production. The document highlights that free pollination, which involves natural pollinators like bees, results in the highest capsule setting compared to manual pollination methods. Bees help transfer pollen efficiently, improving seed set and genetic diversity .

Controlled pollination, including techniques like hand cross-pollination and hand pollination, plays a crucial role in improving the reproductive success of Sesamum indicum. These methods ensure targeted pollen transfer during peak receptivity, leading to increased seed set rates. By overcoming reliance on variable natural pollinator activity, controlled pollination can stabilize and enhance seed production, especially in environments with suboptimal pollinator presence .

The main factors affecting pollination efficiency in Sesamum indicum during summer in Amreli include the time of stigma receptivity, floral morphology, and the influence of pollinators like the honey bee. The highest seed setting occurs when pollination is done between 7:00 and 9:30 a.m. due to peak stigma receptivity. Floral characteristics, such as flower lifespan and the presence of biotic pollinators, also play significant roles. Free pollination showed significantly better seed setting, highlighting the importance of biotic pollinators .

Floral morphology influences pollination strategies by determining the flower's receptivity and the mechanics of pollen transfer. Sesamum flowers have a mixed-pollination system with features that enable both self-pollination and cross-pollination. Their receptive stigmas help capture pollen efficiently in the morning. Moreover, showy colors and nectar attract pollinators, promoting cross-pollination .
