ETABS Structural Design Guide

The ETABS Structural Design Workflow outlines a step-by-step process for creating a structural model, including setting up a new model, defining materials and sections, drawing structural elements, assigning loads, and running analysis. It covers essential tasks such as defining load patterns, checking the model, reviewing results, and designing members. Finally, it includes options for slab design and exporting results or reports.

ETABS Structural Design Workflow (Step-by-Step)

1. Open ETABS

> New Model

> Use built-in settings or import DXF

> Set units (kN-m or your preferred)

2. Set Grid and Story Data

> Define grid spacing

> Define number of stories and their heights

3. Define Materials

> Define > Materials > Add New Material

> Choose Concrete, Steel, etc.

> Set design code parameters (fc', fy)

4. Define Frame Sections

> Define > Section Properties > Frame Sections

> Add beam and column sections with proper sizes and materials

5. Define Slab and Wall Sections

> Define > Section Properties > Slab/Wall Sections

> Set slab thickness and wall types

6. Draw Structural Elements

> Go to Plan View of each story

> Draw > Columns

> Draw > Beams

> Draw > Slabs

> Draw > Shear Walls (if needed)

7. Define Supports
ETABS Structural Design Workflow (Step-by-Step)

> Assign > Joint > Restraints

> Fix base supports (usually fixed for columns at foundation)

8. Define Load Patterns

> Define > Load Patterns

> Add Dead, Live, Earthquake (EQX, EQY), Wind (WX, WY), etc.

> Set load types (e.g., Dead = Dead, EQX = Lateral)

9. Assign Loads

> Assign > Joint/Frame/Area Loads

> Apply dead loads (self-weight auto included if checked)

> Apply live loads to slabs

> Apply lateral loads to frames or diaphragm

10. Define Load Combinations

> Define > Load Combinations

> Add code-based combinations (or auto-generate)

11. Check Model

> Analyze > Check Model

> Resolve any warnings (connectivity, zero length, etc.)

12. Run Analysis

> Analyze > Run Analysis

> Wait for completion

13. Review Results

> Display > Show Deformed Shape

> Display > Forces (bending moment, shear, axial)

> Display > Reactions

> Check base shear and story displacement

14. Design Members

> Design > Concrete Frame Design > Select Code (e.g., ACI 318)

> Design > Start Design/Check of Structure

> Review required reinforcement (beam/column)

15. Slab Design (Optional)

> Manual slab design or

> Export to SAFE for slab and foundation detailing

16. Export or Report

> File > Export (DXF, Excel, SAFE)

> Create calculation sheets and drawings from data
