Tutorial 1 Questions

1. What force must be exerted by an electrical hoist when it lifts a load having a
mass of 15 000 kg?
(147,15 kN)

2. 2.1 Calculate the work done when an elevator with a mass of

1000 kg is used to raise a load of 1000 kg through a height of 60 m.
(1,177 MJ)
2.2 If the elevator travels the 60 m distance in 1 minute, calculate the
power required. (19,62 kW)

3. 3.1 Determine the potential energy of the water in a lake that is situated
750 m above sea level if the lake is approximately 14 km by 10 km
by 100m deep. (1,04 x 10 17 J)
3.2 If the lake is completely replenished by rivers over a period of 5
weeks, calculate the power development by the water flowing to sea
level. (34,06 GW)

4. If thunder is heard 10 seconds after a lightning flash, how far away is the
thunderstorm when the speed of sound in air is 330 m/s? (3300 m)

5. 5.1 A motorcar with a mass of 1750 kg is accelerated constantly from rest

to a speed of 108 km/h in a time of 20 seconds. If all frictional effects
are neglected, calculate the force exerted by the engine. Give the
answer to two decimal places in kN (2,63 kN)
5.2 Calculate the kinetic energy of the motorcar when traveling at 72 km/h.
(350 kJ)

6. One thousand liters of water are pumped vertically upwards for 30 m in a

period of 30 minutes. Calculate the work done and the power required to pump
the water. (294,3 kJ; 163,5 W)

7. Calculate the amount of power required to increase the temperature of 15 liters

of water from 21°C to boiling point in period of 10 minutes. Give the answer
to two decimal places in kW (8.27 kW)

8. A coffee urn has a water equivalent of 1.7 litre.

water from 25°C to boiling point in 13 minutes using the coffee urn. Calculate
the energy consumed by the urn and the power required. (4.40 MJ; 5.64 kW)

9. If the Victoria Falls has a height of approximately 65 m, and the rate of water
flow is approximately 5000 cubic metres per second. Calculate the maximum
power that could be developed from the falls. (3.19 GW)

10. A 75 kg man climbs 600 stairs in 30 minutes. Determine the work done and
the power exerted by the man climbing the staircase if each step is 20 cm high.
(88.29 kJ; 49.1 W)

11. 11.1 How much solar power might be collected on a building roof with an
area of 200 m 2 if the intensity of sunlight on the earth on a clear day
is approximately 160 W/m 2 . (32 kW)
11.2 If only 50% of the collected energy is converted to electricity,
determine how many litres of water may be heated from 25°C to 60°
by 8 hours of sunlight. The hot water storage tank has a water
equivalent of 100 litres. (3,04) kl)

12. A mine-shaft is 700 m deep. Cooling water is needed at the bottom of the
shaft for air-cooling purposes. Instead of wasting the energy of the cool water
dropping to the depth of the mine-shaft it is decided to use this energy to drive
a turbine-generator set situated at the bottom of the shaft.
If the flow rate of the water is 100 litres per minute and the turbine-generator
set has an efficiency of 80%, what electric power is available for use at the
bottom of the shaft? (9.156 kW)
