Drug addiction is a widespread global issue that significantly impacts individuals and
their relationships within families, friendships, and workplaces. Our group chose this
topic because the impact of addiction on relationships is often overlooked, with much
of the focus on the addict’s struggles. By exploring these dynamics, we aimed to
understand addiction as a societal challenge, not just a personal one.
Our goal was to analyze how addiction affects social connections by doing academic
research and using real-world examples. We looked at emotional strain, financial
burdens, and social isolation to provide a comprehensive understanding of its
impact.
Work Habits
a. How well did our group meet our Aim?
Our primary aim was to explore how addiction affects relationships within families,
friendships, and workplaces. We relied on international and national addiction
recovery reports, and expert interviews to address the emotional effect on families,
loss of trust in friendships, and abssenteeism or misconduct in workplaces.
While we succeeded in analyzing family and friendship dynamics, our analysis of
workplace relationships lacked a lot of depth. More case studies or firsthand
accounts could have helped enriched this section.
We also faced coordination issues. For instance, two members independently
researched family dynamics, leaving the workplace topic less researched. These
challenges highlighted areas for improvement in planning and communication.
b. Strengths & Weaknesses of Own Work Habits
My strengths included thorough research, using credible sources such as the World
Health Organization and Danish Health Authority reports. I also took the role of
research and organising meetings. Additionally, I contributed to adding research
facts to the presentation which we presented to younger peers.
However, I struggled with overcommitting by taking on extra tasks like researching
more than my part and managing citations. This added stress and sometimes
reduced my efficiency.
c. Specific Actions for Improvement in the Next Group Project
i. How we can improve our Outcome
For future projects, task contribution should be more well planned. By assigning
roles based on individual strengths such as research or presentation design would
ensure a more balanced workload and deeper in depth research of subtopics. For
example, one member could focus only on workplace dynamics, while another
collects case studies.
Expanding our research methods would also improve the work. Incorpoorating
interviews or surveys would provide firsthand preception and make the analysis
more original. Gathering perspective from families and coleagues affected by
addiction could help offer more depth. Finally, holding more frequent meetings with
our team would help us identify issues earlier and help ensure adjustments
throughout the project.
ii. How I can improve my Work Habits
To improve my work habits, I should plan to use time management tools, such as
calendars from various apps or Trello, to break tasks into smaller, managable steps
and set clear deadlines. This will help me stay organized and reduce stress.
I also need to improve delegation. Trusting my teammates to complete their tasks
will allow me to focus on my responsibilities and prevent procastination. Lastly, I will
be more asertive in group discussions by preparing notes in advance, allowing me to
talk confidently.
Teamwork & Collaboration
a. Benefits & Challenges of Working as a Team
Working as a team provided significant benefits. Collaborating with people from
different backgrounds enriched our analysis. For example, one member’s
understanding of drug addiction on a person helped explore personal dynamics,
while another’s research experience ensured our findings were evidence based. The
teamwork also allowed us to divide the workload, making the project more
manegeable and ensuring work being done in time.
However, many challenges came with it. Like, scheduling problems sometimes
leading to delayed meetings, which slowed down our progress. These issues
required better planning and communication, which we addressed by using shared
presentation platforms like Canva to each others progress track progress.
b. My Strengths & Weaknesses as a Teammate
As a teammate, I excelled at coordinating the group’s research, keeping everyone
informed of deadlines, and encouraging members to contribute more. This helped
elevate a collaborative and calm atmosphere.
However, I struggled with overstepping my boundaries by taking on additional tasks
that could have been delegated. Although I wanted to ensure quality, this sometimes
led to unnecessary pressure and reduced trust within the team. Additionally, my
reluctance to offer feedback at times limited the group’s ability to refine its ideas.
Personal Learning
a. What I Have Learned About Different Cultural Perspectives
This project deepened my understanding of how cultural perspective shape
responses to addiction. In some cultures, addiction is seen as a moral failing, leading
to shame and social isolation. In contrarry, other cultures emphasize communal
rehabilitation, supporting recovery through family and community involvement.
The World Health Organization (2021) reports that societies with harsh views on
addiction discourage help-seeking behavior, increasing social isolation. In the
contrast, cultures that view addiction as a medical issue tend to offer stronger
community support for recovery. These insights emphasized the importance of
culturally sensitive approaches in addiction treatment.
b. Overall Learning from This Project
This project taught me valuable lessons in teamwork, communication, and self-
awareness. I learned the importance of balancing individual work with collaboration,
which is crucial for success in group projects. I developed a greater understanding of
the complex social aspects of addiction, which I had underestimated before.
On a personal level, I recognized the value of delegation and trusting my teammates.
These skills will not only improve my academic performance but also prepare me for
future professional roles. Additionally, the project enhanced my ability to reword
complex information and present it in a clear, engaging way.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this project provided important insights into how drug addiction affects
social circles, while offering personal growth opportunities. Our group largely met its
aim by analyzing the effects of addiction on families, friendships, and workplaces.
However, there is room for improvement in task coordination and research depth.
Personally, I gained a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses as both
a researcher and teammate. By focusing on delegation, time management, and
asertiveness, I hope to make more effective contributions in future projects.
