Comprehension

When hens are ready to lay eggs, they look for a dry, warm, hidden place. As they sit on
their eggs they get very angry if any one comes near. If you are not careful, they will peck
you. Hens lay one egg a day. They will not sit on the eggs until they have laid a lot of them.
Eggs need to be kept in a warm place, that is why hens sit on them. Eggs that are kept
warm hatch within 21 days. This means, the egg shell will crack open and a little chick will
come out. While the hen sits on the eggs she stays there for as long as she can. She only
gets up for a few minutes to eat and then she goes back to her eggs.

After 21 days when the eggs hatch, the little chicks have to be looked after by mother
hen, because of other birds that will try to attack them. Sometimes the hen hatches up to 10
chicks. If anyone tries to take her chicks she attacks them in order to protect them by hiding
her chicks under her wings. The chicks are very tiny; their feathers are fluffy and soft while
the hen is bigger than the chick.
