The primary challenges in achieving precise flatness control in cold tandem rolling mills include nonlinearities and complexities in the rolling process, making it hard to measure process parameters in real-time . The simulation helps address these challenges by establishing a model that considers both the elastic deformation of the roll and the plastic deformation of the strip as a whole. Through this simulation, the rolling process parameters and flatness can be effectively reflected, allowing for better analysis and debugging of control strategies .

Model iterations contribute by continuously refining the rolling force distribution until deviations between assumed and calculated forces meet precise tolerance levels. Each iteration recalibrates assumptions, considering real-time data and newly computed outcomes for deformation models. This iterative process ensures that calculated outputs closely align with actual conditions, thereby enhancing the accuracy of flatness control .

The integration of the strip plastic deformation model and the roll elastic deformation model enhances accuracy by combining the three-dimensional plastic deformation model of the strip with the elastic deformation model of the roll. This integration allows for a more comprehensive analysis of the flatness influence factors, including roll shape changes and strip material properties. It precisely simulates strip edge deformation, which is crucial for analyzing edge drop characteristics, thereby improving the accuracy of flatness control simulations .

Roll shape influences factors such as initial shape, thermal shape, and wear, all of which significantly affect the rolling process. The simulation system considers these factors to analyze their impact on flatness, with roll elastic deformation model outputting strip profiles which are then used as inputs for plastic deformation analysis. Recognizing these influences allows the simulation to reflect changes and adapt strategies for precise flatness control .

The model uses measurements of entry and exit transverse thickness distributions to validate accuracy by comparing these empirical datasets against simulation outputs. The close alignment between calculated and empirical data confirms the model's ability to accurately predict how rolling processes will impact strip flatness. Such measurements are crucial as they provide tangible metrics for assessing and refining model precision, hence optimizing the flatness control strategies employed .

A three-dimensional plastic deformation model is necessary for studying strip edge drop characteristics because it accounts for transverse flow and lateral metal flow near the strip edge, which a two-dimensional model cannot. The two-dimensional model assumes deformation only in thickness and rolling directions, which ignores the necessary three-dimensional aspects of deformation that impact edge drops. The three-dimensional model addresses the strip transverse flow and stress distribution across the width, providing a more accurate representation of actual strip deformations .

The simulation system compensates for the challenges of measuring rolling process parameters online by using a verified model that considers elastic and plastic deformations of the roll and strip. Experimental data from rolling mills are crucial in verifying the model's accuracy. Sampling experiments measure the entry and exit transverse thickness distributions, providing data that help compare calculated simulation results with real-life measurements. This experimental validation confirms the system's ability to reflect rolling parameters accurately .

The calculation model for flatness control simulation involves several key components and steps: initial parameters are inputted, assumed roll force distribution is compared with calculated results, roll deformation model is computed, and exit strip profile is generated. The strip deformation model is then computed, followed by roll force distribution calculation. If calculated results deviate from assumed distributions, the process iterates until precision requirements are met. This results in outputs such as rolling force distribution, exit strip profile, and tension distribution .

The experimental verification steps ensure the reliability of the flatness control simulation system by comparing the calculated outputs with precise measurements taken during actual rolling processes. Spiral micrometers measure the thickness distribution of entry and exit strips, both of which are critical to validating simulation precision. By aligning calculated and measured values, particularly for edge zones, the simulation's accuracy in reflecting real-world conditions is confirmed, securing its reliability .

Increased rolling speed exacerbates challenges in flatness control due to dynamic changes and rapid non-linear responses in the process, thereby increasing the difficulty of maintaining uniformity and precision. As speed intensifies, so do hysteresis and potential overshooting in component reactions, making real-time process adjustments critical yet challenging. Simulation tools allow theoretical exploration and adjustment strategies to adapt to these high-speed dynamics .
