Enhancing Learning with Step & Learn
Enhancing Learning with Step & Learn
In classrooms, kinaesthetic learning is often employed through activities like role-playing, interactive
simulations, and physical games. With digital advancements, this learning style has expanded into tools like
Step & Learn, where students interact with projected content, making learning a more dynamic and
memorable experience.
1. Improve cognitive development: Thinking and movement are connected as physical activities
increase oxygen levels in the blood which then helps fuel the brain.
2. Increase information retention: Movement and physical activities like games, experiments,
manipulatives and outdoors help retain information better. Movement helps create stronger memory
links.
3. Improve social skills: Engaging in kinaesthetic activities often involves interacting with and
communicating with other people. This helps promote teamwork and cooperation.
5. Problem Solving: Learners stay active and use logic and critical thinking. It leads to finding new
ways of solving problems instead
6. Boost Engagement: Physical interaction with learning material keeps students engaged and helps
those with shorter attention spans stay focused.
7. Address Diverse Learning Needs: Not all students thrive in traditional lecture-based environments.
Kinaesthetic learning caters to different learners, ensuring inclusivity.
Step & Learn: Introduction
Path breaking: The representation of the child's cognition is done, traditionally, through writing or
reading alone Read and answer. Listen and answer. Step & Learn is a solution that allows expression of
the child's thoughts, ideas and cognition, through foot work, besides usage of hands (that too not
through writing). This allows the child to learn new ways of expression, to generalize his/her skills
and to apply them in a variety of settings.
Step & Learn, powered by WizeFloor, is an innovative, interactive floor system designed to promote
kinaesthetic learning. The system uses a ceiling-mounted projector to display educational content and
activities on the floor. Learners use their hands and feet to interact with the content, making learning a full-
body, immersive experience. Step & Learn, powered by WizeFloor is with the collaboration with Alexandra
Institute of Denmark.
Step & Learn offers a highly engaging way for children to learn, combining education with physical activity.
The platform supports a wide variety of learning styles, ensuring that it accommodates visual, auditory, and
kinaesthetic learners simultaneously. It is adaptable to different subjects, levels, and environments, making it
ideal for schools.
The music adds the dimension of auditory processing as children follow the cues music offers.
There is instant indication for right responses, and it leads to positive reinforcement.
The learning is completely sensorial and experiential, aligned with the contemporary times.
Bridges kinaesthetic learning with collaboration, critical thinking, communication and creativity
Breaks away from the stereotype connection of gross motor representation with hands alone
The deft footwork allows the learners smart thinking and spatial awareness
• Cognitive Development
2. Collaborative Learning: The system allows multiple students to interact with it at once, encouraging
group participation and collaborative learning.
3. Customizable Content: Teachers can create and modify games and activities to meet the needs of
their curriculum using a web or iOS application. Content can be customized with text, images, videos,
and sound, making the platform adaptable for various learning goals.
4. Diverse Learning Activities: The platform includes various applications like Quiz, Stepstone,
Memory, and Puzzle. These activities cover different subjects and skill sets, such as literacy,
numeracy, teamwork, and creative thinking.
5. User-Friendly Interface: Step & Learn is intuitive and easy to use for both children and adults. The
floor can be operated without keyboards or mice, using only the body to navigate between different
activities.
6. Cloud-Based Storage: All games and exercises created on Step & Learn are stored in the cloud,
allowing teachers to edit and access them from any device with an internet connection. Teachers can
also share games with the broader Step & Learn community.
Applications
Floor Menu: The floor menu is the initial interface children encounter, where they can use their
bodies to select various learning games available on the floor. Teachers, can select games most
relevant to the lesson before it begins, ensuring focused and efficient learning experiences
Quiz: The Quiz application is a floor game inspired by Trivial Pursuit™. Its aim is to answer as many
questions correctly as possible. On Step & Learn powered by WizeFloor, this combines engaging
physical and social activity with the traditional sit-down game. Step & Learn powered by WizeFloor
utilizes kinaesthetic interaction, where children use their bodies to select the correct answers in the
exercises. Additionally, they collaborate as a team to achieve the highest possible score.
Stepstone: Stepstone is a Twister-inspired quiz application designed primarily for four players,
though multiple children can participate if desired. The aim of Stepstone is to cooperate in selecting
the correct answers by placing hands and feet on the stones displayed on the floor. With each
question having multiple correct answers that exceed the number of players, participants must be
active and collaborate effectively to achieve a high score.
Balloons: The Balloons application is a highly physical exercise that requires activating the body to
burst balloons. Like the real world, these balloons burst with a loud BANG when stepped on, or they
might simply be pushed away. It provides an open environment where players can join in, with no
limits to the number of participants except for the physical constraints of the floor.
Floor Keyboard: The Floor Keyboard application is a floor version of a keyboard where children
collaborate to spell different words, particularly useful for language teaching. The application utilizes
kinaesthetic interaction, with children using their bodies to press the keyboard keys during exercises.
Furthermore, they cooperate as a team to achieve the highest possible score.
Theme Cards: The Theme Cards application is about exploring, discovering, and discussing a given
theme. Multiple users can participate in the application. On the floor, a series of cards are displayed
on top of a background that can be a full-size background image.
Geometrix: The exercise can help develop the players’ understanding of geometric shapes through
kinaesthetic interaction. On the floor, a grid is displayed like the grid paper known from math
teaching.
Memory (Teams): The Memory application is a kinaesthetic version of the traditional concentration
game, a card game in which all the cards are laid face down on the surface and the players take turns
flipping pairs of cards over. The objective of the game is to turn over pairs of matching cards, so the
children must memorize the location of cards on the floor by taking turns to find as many pairs as
possible. Matching pairs can be both identical pieces and pieces with different representations.
Moreover, cards in Memory may contain pictures, text, or audio – hence, more modalities can be
utilized simultaneously.
Flowers: The Flowers application is a version of a flower field – an aesthetic place for sensory
stimulation. It focuses on creating a sensory environment of colours, movement, and sounds
primarily for toddlers (1–3 years of age).
Football: The Football application is a version of a football game. The players on the two teams kick
the representation of the ball, which moves accordingly. The objective is to score as many goals as
possible within one and a half minutes. The team with the highest score when time is up wins the
game.
Puzzle: The Puzzle application is a classic puzzle where the aim is to place the pieces of a puzzle in
the correct order. One player at a time can mark the piece they want to move by stepping on it and
then walking to the space on the floor where the piece should be placed.
The piece will follow the player to its new location, and when placed correctly, the separating lines
between the pieces will be erased and the colours enhanced, providing important feedback to the
child.
Categories: Categorize, as the name implies, is about categorization. A series of cards that can
contain text, images, and sound are displayed, and users stand on the bubble with the correct
category name. Categories can include words, letters, or numbers.
Sequence: A sequence functions similarly to a stack but operates with tiles that run sequentially. For
instance, it can start with a slideshow followed by a quiz. Additionally, sequences can be configured
as pause screens that automatically start from the floor menu after a period of inactivity.
Balloons (Pictures): The Balloons (Pictures) application is similar to the Balloons application but
allows for displaying pictures on the balloons. This feature enables various categorization games,
such as stepping on balloons with specific categories like animals.
Bomb the Pirate: Bomb the Pirate is a math game designed for children aged five to twelve. The goal
is to position oneself correctly on a number line, coordinate with others, fire a cannon, and hit the
pirate on a ship in the harbour. This game offers training in numbers, decimal numbers, fractions, and
more.
Dungeon Jump (Memory): In Dungeon Jump (Memory), players must jump from one stone to
another on the floor to practice their memory skills. The objective is to find the key, open the treasure
chest, and complete the tasks.
Dungeon Jump (Spelling): In Dungeon Jump (Spelling), players must jump from one stone to
another on the floor to practice spelling. The goal is to find the key and open the treasure chest. This
game allows up to three players to take turns solving the tasks. In the spelling version, players
practice spelling words by jumping from one stone to another. When all words are correctly spelled,
the key appears, and the treasure chest can be opened.
Fishing: The Fishing game is about catching fish and achieving the highest team score. The app is
suitable for use with a tool like a long stick for special needs education.
Jewel Packer: Jewel Packer is a math game for children between five and twelve years of age, where
the objective is to gain a sense of rhythm and bodily understanding of the relation between numbers.
This is done by tapping one’s foot in the correct pace to load diamonds into numbered mine wagons
in a jewel mine.
Memory (Single): The Memory application is a kinaesthetic version of the traditional concentration
game – a card game in which all the cards are laid face down on the surface, and the players take
turns flipping pairs of cards over. The objective of the game is to turn over pairs of matching cards, so
the children must memorize the location of cards on the floor by taking turns to find as many pairs as
possible.
Obstacle Race: In Obstacle Race, 1–4 players play together to overcome different obstacles. The
players are given their own track on the floor where they run in place. The players encounter
different objects such as insects, moles, footballs, bananas, and much more.
For some obstacles, they receive bonus points, while others subtract points, so they must be careful
where they step. Eventually, points are added up, and the total scores of the players are displayed on
the scoreboard.
Piano: Piano is a floor piano where the purpose is to play songs on the floor using the piano keys.
Besides playing, it is also possible to learn how the notes are placed on a music score. By pressing the
red buttons, different sounds can be used for playing songs.
Sensory Path: Sensory Path seeks to help children relax and concentrate in the classroom, thereby
promoting learning and physical literacy. The children must follow the path on the floor from start to
finish. Along the path, the children must overcome various obstacles such as jumping over
caterpillars or holes in the ground, rotating around themselves, walking sideways, and many other
obstacles.
Storyteller: Storyteller is an application that can be used in many ways. It can be used to interact
with fairy tales on the floor as a kind of advanced storytelling. It is possible to add your own
background image, music, and video, as well as to create different effects such as sound effects,
scratch layers, tracking of elements, change of scenery, etc.
Quiz: Quiz (Multi) is the multiple-choice edition of the Quiz application. Like in Quiz, the purpose is
to answer as many questions correctly as possible. In this variation, there can be one or multiple
correct answers that must be marked for each question
