ANALYSIS AND ITS PRACTICAL

Research Component
A polygraph, commonly known as a lie detector, is an instrument
used to record physiological responses that are believed to be
associated with truth-telling or deception. The polygraph measures
several autonomic nervous system indicators, including heart rate,
respiratory rate, blood pressure, and electrodermal activity (sweat
gland activity).
The basic premise of the polygraph is that deceptive answers will
produce physiological responses that can be differentiated from those
associated with non-deceptive answers. The subject is typically
connected to the polygraph machine via sensors placed on the chest
(for respiratory rate), arm (for blood pressure), and fingers (for sweat
gland activity).
Chart Interpretation
The chart above is a hypothetical polygraph result from a fictional
scenario in which a suspect is asked a series of questions related to a
theft incident. The chart indicates notable physiological changes in
response to a critical question.
Each question is mapped to a 10-second interval during a 60-second
examination.

Key Observation:
The physiological responses observed during the examination suggest
a correlation between the intensity of the emotional or cognitive load
associated with each question and the individual's physiological
reactions. The most significant changes occur when the questions
become more personally incriminating or directly relevant (especially
between 30–50 seconds), with marked increases in heart rate, sweat,
and blood pressure. These responses could indicate a heightened
stress or deception when discussing actions directly related to the
missing wallet. The baseline (0–10 seconds) and control questions (10–
20 seconds) show minimal physiological fluctuation, reinforcing the
idea that normal or truthful responses are less likely to provoke
significant physical reactions.
Practical Application
Polygraph tests are often used in criminal investigations, employee
screenings, and even some national security settings. In law
enforcement, they can serve as investigative tools to corroborate or
question a suspect’s statements. In human resources, especially for
high-security jobs, they may be used to evaluate trustworthiness.
However, the reliability of polygraph results is widely debated.
While some view it as a useful psychological tool, courts in many
jurisdictions do not accept polygraph results as evidence due to
potential inaccuracies.
Ethically, the use of polygraphs raises questions about privacy,
informed consent, and the risk of false positives and negatives.
Individuals may exhibit stress responses due to anxiety or nervousness
unrelated to deception, potentially leading to wrongful conclusions.
Thus, polygraphs should be used with caution and ideally as part of a
broader investigative framework.
