LESSON 1
The importance of art
I learned from this lesson it has given me a broader perspective on what art truly is and how it
affects people’s lives. I used to think that art was just about paintings, sculptures, or drawings,
but I now understand that it is everywhere—in music, dance, film, architecture, literature, and
even digital media. Art is a reflection of human creativity, emotions, and imagination, making it
an essential part of human expression . It is a powerful tool for communication and can reflect culture,
history, and personal identity.I also realized that imagination and creativity are essential in producing
art. Without them, art would lack originality and personal meaning
One of the biggest realizations I had from this lesson is that art is not just about aesthetics it
serves many important functions. It can be used for communication, allowing people to share
ideas and emotions even without words. It can also be a form of healing through art therapy,
helping people express feelings they cannot put into words. Additionally, art serves as a
historical record, preserving the culture, traditions, and experiences of different generations.
Without art, many aspects of human history and identity would be lost.
Another interesting idea from this lesson is that art is subjective. People can interpret the same
piece of art in different ways based on their personal experiences, beliefs, and emotions. This
means that there is no single "correct" way to appreciate or understand art—it is meant to be felt
and experienced differently by each individual. This made me realize that even if I don’t
personally connect with a piece of art, it may still hold deep meaning for someone else.
Moreover, this lesson made me appreciate the role of creativity and imagination in art. Without
these two elements, art would be lifeless and repetitive. Artists use their creativity to bring new
ideas to life, challenge societal norms, and inspire [Link] made me reflect on how I can
apply creativity in my own life is ot just in artistic fields but also in problem-solving, innovation,
and self-expression.
The philosophical perspectives on art helped me see that art is more than just a product it is a
process of exploration, experimentation, and meaning-making. Some philosophers see art as a
form of truth, while others believe it is simply a means of personal or societal expression. This
made me think about the deeper question: What is art to me? I realized that, for me, art is a way
to connect with others, understand different cultures, and even discover parts of myself.
This lesson has deepened my appreciation for art and its significance in daily life. Art is not just
something to be admired it is something to be felt, understood, and valued. It has made me more
open to exploring different forms of art and recognizing their impact on history, culture, and
personal identity. I want to engage with art more actively, whether by creating, analyzing, or
simply appreciating it in a deeper way.
LESSON 2
Subject, Content, anf art makers
I learned from this lesson is about the three different classification of arts. Representational art is
defined as artwork that depicts a recognizable subject, appearing in various forms like paintings,
sculptures, and literature. The Mona Lisa is given as a prime example. Non-representational (or
non-figurative) art. conversely, does not reference the real world and is created purely for
aesthetic [Link]'s Number 1, 1948 is presented as an example of non-representational
art. His "drip" or pouring technique, where he placed his canvases on the floor and moved
around them, is described as a way to express energy and enthusiasm. This action painting style
is said to embody both freedom and order. Abstract art as another classification. Unlike non-
representational art, which entirely avoids real-world references, abstract art transforms real-
world subjects in a way that is different from how they are viewed in the real world. Also
animals have always been popular subjects for artist throughout history.
The meaning of art such as factual meaning refers to the primary level of meaning based on the
most recognizable or identifiable elements in the artwork Conventional meaning, on the other
hand, is the accepted interpretation of the artwork by authorities or art experts. Subjective
meaning arise when personal experiences and viewpoints are [Link] that when
engaging with art, multiple meanings are common because a single artwork can express many
different things to many different viewers.
The Three Stages in the creative process this initial stage involves selecting or choosing a
specific project. it is first stage it's also crucial because it sets the foundation for formulating
ideas and gathering resources. Assimilation this stage follows allowing for the natural rhythms
and needs of the creative [Link] stage of the creative process as the Completion stage. It
emphasizes that before presenting the finished project to an audience, it's necessary to finalize
and complete the work.
The stages of production process such as pre-production which is conceptualization of the
theme, audition, casting, and workshops for theater or movies. While production process or
medium manipulation refers to the represebtation of the art. Final production process is post-
production or exhibition involves the evaluation, critiquing, press release, and acknowledgement.
I learned also about the different between artist and artisan. Artist is using their imagination
while artisan is was someone who made things using their hand. Also how I appreciate the
efforts of our artist and artisans in the country. And also I already know about the Gawad sa
manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA), also known as the National Living Treasure Award is also a
search for the finest traditional artists of the land. This has been awarded by NCcA and
UNESCO since 1992. As proposed under R.A 7355. GAMABA awardee is given an initial grant
of PHP 100,000 PHP 14,000 monthly pension, and PHP 750,000 and hospitalization benefits
(NCCA, 2021).
LESSON 3
Elements and Principles of art
I learned from this lesson is to appreciate the intricate relationship between these two core
concepts in visual art. The elements of visual arts such as line, shape, form, value, color, texture,
space and perspective as individual building blocks. However, I already understand their power
way in their interplay, guided by the principles of artistic composition.
The elements themselves were fascinating to explore. And i know the types of Line if what is the
different of straight, curve, angular and it is important because, they help create visually
appealing compositions, communicate complex ideas, and ensure structural integrity. from
delicate curves to bold, jagged strokes can evoke diverse emotions and direct the viewer's
[Link] exploration of shape and form helped me understand how two-dimensional and three-
dimensional forms contribute to the overall structure and depth of a piece.
The interplay of value (light and shadow) and color added layers of complexity, influencing
mood and creating main points. We have the three categories of colors such as primary colors,
secondary colors, tertiary colors. The the lighter color (made by adding white to it) is called a
tint, while a darker color (made by adding black is called a shade. Texture, both real and
implied, added another sensory dimension, inviting tactile engagement even in a visual medium.
Also the space, both positive and negative, revealed how artists manipulate the canvas to create a
sense of depth, distance, and balance.
The principles of artistic composition balance, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, unity, and
variety provided the framework for organizing these elements effectively. I learned how balance,
whether symmetrical or asymmetrical, creates a sense of visual harmony. Emphasis, through
strategic placement of elements, directs the viewer's attention to key areas. Movement guides the
eye through the artwork, creating a sense of flow and narrative. Pattern and rhythm repeat
elements in predictable or unpredictable ways, adding visual interest and texture. Unity ties all
the elements together, creating a cohesive whole, while variety prevents monotony and adds
visual excitement.
The most significant takeaway from this lesson is the interconnectedness of these elements and
principles. They are not separate entities but rather interdependent components that work
together to create a powerful and meaningful visual experience. The skill way not just in
understanding each element and principle individually, but in skillfully manipulating them to
achieve a desired artistic effect. This lesson has equipped me with a new vocabulary and a
deeper appreciation for the artistry involved in creating a visually compelling artwork.
LESSON 4
Reading the Image
I learned from this lesson is the importance of reading images because it is a way of looking at
images beyond simply seeing them. It's about actively engaging with an image to understand its
meaning, messages, and the way it shapes our perceptions.
I learned that images in the traditional arts is part of a culture of a certain group of people it is
often intended to convey religious, moral, or historical narratives. The example of traditional arts
is Manuggul jar which is it is the traditionql that was discovered in 1964 by Victor Decalan,
Hans Kasten and other. While images in everyday life serves a variety of purposes, including
information, persuasion, entertainment, and emotional [Link] example of images in
everyday life is watermelon it is symbol of paletisnian solidarity and resistance. Also I already
know that images in the contemporary arts is art found in paintings, sculptures, drawings,
illustrations, cartoons, posters, murals, photographs, and film.
The importance of basic documentation of the work The basic documentation of a work is
essential because it provides a permanent record of the creation, development, and completion of
the project. . By maintaining accurate and comprehensive records, individuals can also
demonstrate their skills, expertise, and accomplishments, which can be invaluable for future
projects, exhibitions, or career opportunities. Also i learned that spoliarium is masterpiece
created by renowed filipino artist Juan Luna. Is is a largest painting executed in oil canvas,
measures an impressive 4.22 meters in height and 7.67 meters in width, completed in 1884.
Also I learned how the four planes of analysis is importance such as The basic semiotic plane
highlights the significance of signs and symbols within an image, which carry cultural, historical,
and personal [Link] example of of semiotic is Scream by Edvard Munch. The iconic
plane draws attention to the image itself, its composition, color palette, and texture, which
collectively contribute to its aesthetic appeal and emotional impact. The example of iconic plane
is the painting of Fernando Amrosolo.
The contextual plane emphasizes the importance of considering the image's context, including
its creator, audience, and social, cultural, and historical background. The example of contextual
plane is the painting by Rossetti called Proserpine. The last is about axiological or evaluative
plane encourages us to evaluate the image's value, both aesthetically and morally, and to consider
its potential influence on our attitudes and beliefs. The example of axiomogical or evaluative
plane is painted by the renowned Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci.
LESSON 5
Art History
I learned from this lesson is about the ancient art pre-modern art which is it is the civilizations
reveal the determination of humankind to go beyond the instinct to survive. According Eden
Gallery (2021) the pre-modern art movements and styles were focused on realistic narratives,
which modern artists challenged with their experimental tastes.
Modern art is industrial revolution marked the start of modern art, in this period, from the middle
19th century untill the latr 20th century ,visual artists, architects, musicians, and writers, rejected
the linear representation of reality, restrictions and limitations of academic and traditional art
styles. The modern art is we have the Impressionism, Neo- impressionism, Post- impressionism,
Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Expressionism, Abstract [Link]
contemporary art is not only focus on social themes, their socio-political advocacies, what they
represent, and how they connect with their audience . Also contemporary we have pop-art,
minimalism, conceptual art, performance art, eart art, street art, photorealism, installation art,
neo-pop art digital art.
Also I already know about arts of sout asia it is a region where bollywood emerged from. Indian
subcontinent the movies of india it is an example. Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam have been the
most culturally prominent in shaping the artistic traditions of this region. Art of East Asia we
have presently Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia and Mongolia. However, Korea, Japan, and Chinz
also hold a central and more popular representation in the artistic tradition of the region. Linear
focus is probably the most distinctive feature of East Asian arts. Also the arts of southeast asia is
ancient temples that exemplify the grandeur of the artistic traditions are connected to Buddhism.
Southeast asia is we have (Southern Philippines, Southern Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei). Arts
of Central Asia is the region that includes (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan , Turkmenistan,
Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Mongolia , Tibet, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, and Islamic parts
of Russia and the uyghurstan.
Islamic art is guided by the principle of Tawhid, the oneness of God worshipping God through
the prescribed and original form taught by the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) utilizes symbolic
elements such as arabesques (floral/vegetal motifs), geometry reflecting the order of the
universe, and calligraphy representing Quranic verses. These elements are found throughout
Islamic. These elements are found throughout Islamic art, adapting to local cultures while
maintaining core principles. Balance between adherence to religious restrictions and the
integration of diverse cultural influences in Islamic artistic expression. Islamic art provides
invaluable insight into the history, beliefs, and cultural values of Islamic civilizations across
diverse regions and time periods. It reveals how religious principles have shaped artistic
expression and how cultural exchange has influenced artistic styles.
LESSON 6
Local arts
I learned from this lesson is that local arts of the Philippines are a dynamic and diverse collection that
has evolved over centuries through cultural interactions, indigenous traditions, and abundant
natural environment. Each indigenous communities in the Philippines possess their own distinct
artistic methods of self-expression,which include weaving , carving, and metallurgy. One of the
example of indigenous people in Tacloban, Visayas have stylish body tattoos, which searve as an
early local art form. The spaniards reffered to them as Pintados, a term that translates as
“painted” in English. Also the Visayan tattooed warriors, also known as Mandirigmang
Batuk’an.I laerned also about the martial artd and weaponry which is indigenous people of the
philippines developed combat techniques in response to their ever- changing environment and
commonly referred to as arnis, eskrima, and kali.
The writing system of the Philippines' earliest inhabitants is unique. The scripts exhibit
geographical variation. The Laguna Copperplate Inscription (LCI) is among the earliest known
written records of the [Link], these archaic Philippine scripts encompass distinct
writing systems that were originated and thrived in the Philippines about in 300 B.C. These
ancient manuscripts are associated with the writing systems used in Southeast [Link] example
is the Arabic scripts used by the Meranaw of Lanao and the Tausug of Sulu. The former uses the
Kirim scripts, while the latter uses the Jawi scripts. The arrival of Muslims to the Southern
Philippines greatly impacted this style of writing.
Additionally, the Baybayin is a hypernym or umbrella term for the scripts that have been
extensively employed in traditional Tagalog domains and other regions of the Philippines,
specifically Visayas and Luzon. By the end of the 17th century, Baybayin had nearly disappeared
from use, although it had been extensively usedthroughout the 15th century. Also the Textiles
and Accessories feature a wide range of styles and materials. Accessories including
shells, gold, pearls, jade, silver, brass, copper, horns, bills, and a plethora of other object.
The Philippines showcases a diverse range of textile types, including the brocaded weave
(pinilian) of the locano, the wavy designs of the Bontoc, the geometric designs of the Kalinga,
the piña fabric of the Aklanon, the hablon fabric of the Kiniray-a and Hiligaynon, the seputangan
fabric of the Yakan, the mabal tabih fabric of the Blaan, the bagobo inabal fabric of the Bagobo
Manobo, the dagmay fabric of the Mandaya, the colorful and intricate designs of the langkit
fabric of the Marenaw, the pis syabit fabric of the Tausug, and the t’nalak fabric of the T’boli.
Also I already know the Philippine indigenous instruments such as Aerophones which is wind
instruments while the chordophones is stringed instruments and the last is idiophones which is
percussion instruments.
.LESSON 7
Auditory arts
I learned from this lesson is that auditory art is fundamental method of classifying the arts is by
their mediums. Which is these are visual or space arts, auditory arts, auditory or times arts, and
mixed or combined arts. Also I already know that visual arts is also called spatial arts or arts of
space are arts with mediums that can be seen and occupy space. Auditory art is the art of
arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition
through melody, harmony, or rhythm. Auditory art is that is heard at one particular time.
Auditory art is also known as time arts. Just as the medium of visual arts is sight, the medium of
all auditory arts is sound. Also we have two general categories or types of auditory arts. These
are music and literature.
I learned also about that Music is heard using words, sounds, tones, pitches, volumes, tempos,
melodies, harmonies, rhythm and dynamics. We have a five most common functions of music
such as Attempt to imitate nature sounds, Release of one’s emotions and feelings, Signals in
wars, Means of worship and rituals, Means of worship and rituals, form of entertainment. It is to
be remembered that vibration produces sound. Regular vibrations produce tones or musical
sounds as irregular vibrations produce house.
There are four qual es of sound-timbre (quality), pitch (relative highness or lowness), duration
(length of time which a sound occupies), and intensity (loudness or softness) as there are 11
elements of music-rhythm (the pattern of regular and irregular pulses caused in music by the
occurrence of strong and weak beats), pulse (the beat of the music), timbre (the tone of the
musical note), pitch (how high or low a note sounds), dutration (the length of a musical note),
tempo (the speed of the pulse), dynamics (how loud/quiet the music is), tonality (the key in
which a piece is written), harmony (the relationship between two or more simultaneously
sounding notes), structure (the way in which an over-all piece of music is arranged into similar
and contrasting sections, and texture (the way in which melody, rhythm, and harmony are
combined in a piece of music).
And the poetry is have a three elements such as sound, rhythm and meaning. The element of
sound is very important in poetry as it plays an important role in making a poem good or bad. If
a poen sounds good to the ear, it already has one requirement in the bag. If a poem is painful to
the ears, something has to be done to make it sound more pleasing. Rhythm and sound go hand
in hand in poetry at all times. Rhythm is the strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or
sound. Repetitions such as alliteration, consonance, assonance, and rhyming are the main ways
to make use of sound in poetry. I learned also from this lesson is about the Alliteration which is
repetition of the same sounds, while consonance is the repetition of identical or similar
consonants sounds. Also assonance is the repetition of the same or similar vowel sound, lastly is
rhyming which is repetition of the same similar ending sounds of words.
LESSON 8
Applied and Combined Arts
I learned from this lesson is that applied arts are best defined as arts that apply artistic designs or
decorations to make simple and plain utilitarian art beautiful and attractive. Man is always
attracted to what is beautiful, and he finds no reason to confine things he creates to physical
function alone when beauty can simultaneously be achieved with it. In that sense, all applied arts,
therefore, are functional as well as beautiful. They are also called utilitarian arts for the basic
reason that none of these are created without a function in mind from utensils, furniture, and
draperies, up to gigantic pyramids and skyscrapers which are created to cater to human needs and
cope with the demands of living with ease and beauty.
One of the oldest applied arts ever created by man is architecture. Roads, bridges, houses,
commercial centers, palaces, and cathedrals are absolutely functional and are constructed in a
manner beautiful to the sight of man. Structures like pediments, windows, façade, posts, walls,
ceilings, etc., were constructed with embellishments and decorative designs to make the building
look beautiful. The Erechtheion in the Acropolis of Athens for example, had caryatids (Figure 1)
as posts to carry the weight of the roofing system The structures were sculpted females which act
as pillars or columns for the building - they are both functional and decorative.
I also learned that we have a two general types of applied arts such as machine-made products
that have fixed designs for specific products and are mass-produced and craft products that are
made by artisans or skilled workers. About decorative Art this refers to artworks primarily
created to beautify man and his surroundings. Metalware this is the art of crafting artworks and
materials. Ceramic Art this is the art of producing artworks made of ceramics, including clay,
and ceramic materials for construction. Fashion Design this is the art of applying aesthetics to
clothing and its accessories. Interior Design refers to the art applied in the architectural interiors
along with the furnishings and other essential [Link] design this refers to manual
and mechanical art creations through the skills of using tools and machines. Automotive design
this is crafting machine or vehicles. Crafts this is articles or artworks made by craftspeople.
Graphic arts and cartographic design refer to both fine and applied arts. Illuminated Manuscripts
is a subtype of painting that refers to the painted or decorative figure. Calligraphy refers to
artistic, stylized or elegant handwriting or lettering. Book Illustration this is the pictures or
diagrams.
Also I learned combined arts is combination of two or more mediums, example motion picture
which combine action at different scenes, complex lighting effects, sounds, and music. Dance
also is combination of synchronized body movements, and music. Opera is combination of
acting on stage. Combine arts, utilize the plastuc (visual), phonetic (aural) and kinetic (body
movement).performing arts is another name that used to combined art. One subtype of combined
arts is called hybrid arts.
LESSON 9
Soul-making and appropriation
I learned from this lesson is about the soulmaking which is it is a experience to transfer through
arts. Soul-making also mean converting an experience, whether a short moment or a life-long
encounter, into images and symbols. Therefore soul-making also involves deriving and making
meaning out of an experience. Soul- making is proof that every one has the potential to become
an artist. Soul-making relates to the assumption that art is a means of communication, which
fulfills the personal function of art.
Also I learned that Leonardo da Vinci is we have a (7) guided principles, such as curiosita/
[Link]’ta. It refers to the quality of a curious individual. To having a curiosity to our mind it
can help us because we trying to investigate to find an answer to our question to our our mind.
By that you will be able to discover many things, to learn about various phenomena, and to
collect knowledge that would serve as the basis for conceptualizing new ideas. Demostrazione/
di. mo. strat’tsjo. ne/. It means learning from experience and some people say that experience is
the best teacher. Sensazione/[Link]/. Refers to the use of all our senses: sight, hearing,
taste, touch, and smell. Sfumato / sfu’[Link]/. Derived from “ fumare” which means to smoke,” it
is translated as”vanished.” Arte /arte/ and Scienza/ [Link]/. Refers to balance between arts and
science. Corporalita. “Corpus” means body, thus, this principle relates to ensuring that we are
physically fit. Connessione / [Link]’[Link]/. This pertains to our connection with others.
Another idea or knowledge that i know already from this lesson is what is cultural appropriation
and cultural appreciation . Cultural appropriation is like plagiarism, example is adoptionor use of
elements of one culture by a members of a different culture. While cultural appreciation is
defined as the collective practices and beliefs that are unique to a group of people. Example of
cultural appreciation is you have to be very careful. Some things are really sacred and important
to other cultures, so you have to be aware, politically, about these things before you just adopt
them. In order to appreciate something, you don’t just wear something just to wear it you have to
understand the history about it.
LESSON 10
Improvisation and transcreation
I learned that improvisation and transcreation are powerful tools for artistic expression and
innovation. Improvisation allows artists to think on their feet, respond to unexpected situations,
and create something new and original in the moment. This process encourages creativity,
adaptability, and resilience. By embracing improvisation, artists can tap into their intuition and
instincts, leading to fresh insights and innovative solutions. Because improvisation is without so
much preparation or planning, so this process is called improvisation or improv, described as “
spontaneous, unplanned or otherwise free-ranging creativity.
Improvisation, or extemporization, in music is characterized by unrehearsed performance of a
song or any part of a musical performance. While improvised theater, according to Britanica
(2017), refers to a theater without rehearsing a memorized script or diamogue. And
improvisation is also applied in dance performances when a dancer creates body movements and
actions spontaneously with or without musical accompaniment.
Transcreation, on the other hand, involves reinterpreting and reimagining existing works,
breathing new life into familiar ideas. This process requires a deep understanding of the original
work, as well as the ability to see beyond its limitations. By transcreating existing works, artists
can create new meanings, challenge assumptions, and push boundaries.
This lesson taught me that creativity is not just about generating new ideas, but also about being
open to new possibilities and perspectives. Improvisation and transcreation require a willingness
to take risks, experiment, and push boundaries. By embracing these principles, artists can tap into
their full potential and create works that are truly unique and innovative.
Furthermore, I realized that improvisation and transcreation are not limited to artistic expression.
These principles can be applied to everyday life, enabling us to approach challenges with a more
flexible and adaptable mindset. By embracing improvisation and transcreation, we can cultivate
creativity, resilience, and innovation in all aspects of our lives.
