Q-1 A DC shunt motor rated at 360V terminal voltage has the following specifications:
Total field flux = 0.01 Wb
No. of conductors in armature = 333 (series connected)
Armature resistance = 0.267 Ω
Field Resistance = 1000 Ω
Assume that armature reaction is negligible and rotational losses are 600W. If the motor is operating
at rated terminal voltage while running at 1000 rpm, find:
(a) Output Torque produced by the motor
(b) Input Power drawn by the motor
(c) Output Power of the motor
(d) Efficiency of the motor
Ans : (a) 135.05 Nm, (b) 15.34 kW, (c) 14.14 kW, (d) 92.18%
Q-2 A 75kW, 250V compound DC machine has the following parameters:
R=0.040 Ω, 𝑅2 = 0.0040 Ω, 𝑅𝑓 = 100 Ω and, brush contact drop, 𝑉𝑏𝑟 = 2V (1V each brush)
Compare the induced emf when machine is operated as generator and motor at full load condition.
Ans : 265.3 V, 234 V
Q-3 A 220V, shunt connected DC motor is mechanically coupled to a fan and draws 25A and runs at
300rpm when connected to 220V supply with no external resistance connected to the armature circuit.
The fan torque is proportional to the square of speed. The moto r has the following parameters:
𝑅 𝑎= 0.6 Ω 𝑅𝑓 = 200 Ω
Neglecting armature reaction and rotational loss,
(a) Calculate:
1. Power delivered to the fan
2. Torque developed by the machine
(b) Suppose you want to change the speed to 400 rpm by field resistance control. Calculate the
required field resistance and power delivered to the fan.

Q-4 A 25-kW 125-V separately excited dc machine is operated at a constant speed of 3000 r/min with
a separately excited field winding, where the field current is controlled by changing the field
resistance using a rheostat.
Consider the following parameters for the machine:
1. Armature resistance = 0.02 Ω
2. Field voltage = 50 V (constant)
3. Field winding resistance = 100 Ω (when no load voltage = 125 V )
Compute the armature current, terminal power, and electromagnetic power and torque when the
terminal voltage is 125 V and field resistance is (a) 101.63 Ω (b) 97.66 Ω
Ans : 100 A, 12.5 kW, 12.3 kW and 39.15 Nm
Q-5 Consider a 25kW, 220V DC generator with following parameters:
Armature Resistance = 0.1 Ω
Field Resistance = 200 Ω
1. Calculate voltage regulation of the generator when:
(a) Generator field is excited with a separate source of 140 V (assume no load voltage as 220 V and
machine is running at constant speed)
(b) Generator is shunt connected (assume no load voltage is 220 V and the speed of the generator is
maintained constant by external means)
