COMPUTER APPLICATION WITH CAD

FOR ENGINEERING LEVEL II

PRACTICAL

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER NETWORKING

In the world of computing, the knowledge of how computers communicate in a

network is very important to being a good network technician. This chapter

introduces you to the basics of what makes a network tick, and covers basic
topics and terminology that will set the foundation for the rest of your studies.

More and more people are building home and small office networks now as a

result of the low cost of networking devices such as hubs and home routers. As a

Network Certified Professional, you will need to ensure that you can support

these small, medium and large networks, such so we will start by learning some

basic terms.

A network is a group of systems that are connected to allow sharing of resourcessuch

as files or printers –or sharing of services-such as an Internet connection.

There are two aspects of setting up a network the hardware used to connect the

systems together and the software installed on the computers to allow them to

communicate. This chapter is designed to give you an understanding of the

hardware used to build a network and later chapters discuss the software needed.

The network hardware is made up of two basic components: the entities that want

to share the information or resources such as servers and workstations, and the

medium that enables the entities to communicate, which is a cable or wireless

medium.

Computer applications in vocational training enhance the learning process by providing interactive and practical experiences. They equip trainees with essential digital skills, improve problem-solving abilities through simulations and software applications, and introduce trainees to industry-standard tools. This prepares them for modern workplace demands and can increase job opportunities .

Computer software refers to programs and operating systems that enable the user to perform specific tasks on a computer, while hardware encompasses the physical components that make up the computer system. Routers offer advantages such as creating a local network and connecting multiple networks together, while bridges extend networks by connecting two separate networks, providing increased bandwidth and improved management of network data .

Saving files ensures that data and work progress are not lost during unexpected power outages or system failures. It also stores the information for future access and editing. Renaming files helps in managing files more efficiently, allowing easier retrieval based on recognizable naming conventions. This involves locating the file, right-clicking to select rename, and entering the new desired name .

Factors hindering vocational trainees from acquiring computer application skills include lack of access to modern technology and equipment, insufficient training support and resources, poorly designed curriculum that does not meet industry standards, and limited opportunities for hands-on experience and practice. Addressing these issues is essential for equipping trainees with relevant skills for the job market .

The Print Preview tool allows users to see how a document will look when printed, helping to identify formatting issues or errors before printing. This can save time and resources by reducing unnecessary prints. Steps to preview a document typically include selecting 'File' and then 'Print' from the menu, which opens the Print Preview window where the layout and formatting can be examined .

The CPU processes data by using its control unit and arithmetic logic unit (ALU) to interpret and execute program instructions. Data is received from input devices or pre-stored data and processed sequentially according to the program. The CPU temporarily stores this data in registers for rapid access during processing. Processed data can be transferred to RAM or storage devices for future use, demonstrating how data flows through a computer system from input to storage .

An operating system is system software that manages computer hardware and provides services for other software, ensuring effective communication with hardware. Application software, however, is designed for end-users to perform specific tasks like word processing or browsing the internet. Understanding the difference is important because it informs users how their computers operate, facilitates troubleshooting, and aids in the selection of suitable software for specific tasks .

To insert a new column, navigate to the worksheet, select the column heading where you wish the new column to appear, right-click, and select 'Insert' from the context menu. This ability is important for managing and organizing data effectively, as it allows users to add new data fields, enhancing the capacity for data analysis and reporting .

The control unit directs the operation of the processor and coordinates tasks among components. The power supply converts electrical power from an outlet into usable power for the internal components. RAM provides volatile storage that is used by the CPU to store data temporarily while processing tasks. The computer case houses all computer components, providing structural integrity and protection. The motherboard connects and allows communication between all components, including CPU, RAM, and peripherals .

Learning presentation applications equips vocational trainees with skills to communicate ideas effectively and creatively present information through visual aids. These applications enhance training by fostering creativity, improving public speaking skills, and allowing trainees to create professional presentations that can be used in various industries, thus increasing their employability .
