Learning aim C: Undertake a maintenance activity safely on a piece of plant or equipment to


ensure its continued safe operation

Scenario: You are working as a Junior Maintenance Engineer in an engineering firm. Management
is pleased with your work, your understanding of the company’s operations and the way in which you
carry duties. As a result, the Operations Manager has asked you to produce a maintenance plan for
an item of engineered plant or equipment.

She wants you to produce all the relevant documentation and test the process methods which will
form the maintenance plan for use by the department on the particular piece of equipment.

You are going to: Produce a detailed maintenance plan for management, perform a maintenance
activity, complying with all relevant maintenance and health & safety legislation.

To do this: Your tutor will provide you with the specifications of a piece of engineering plant that
requires a detailed maintenance and condition monitoring plan. You will have access to a piece of
engineering plant on which you should safely perform and document maintenance activity.

You need to:


Produce a detailed maintenance and condition monitoring plan and log, including supporting
paperwork, when carrying out maintenance and condition monitoring activities safely. Observation
records and witness statements of completing the routine maintenance activity.

Task 1
Produce a detailed yearly maintenance plan for the Harrison M300 Manual Centre Lathe. Your
maintenance plan should include the following:

• equipment type, description, location, identification number


• type of maintenance procedure
• maintenance procedure description
• frequency of procedure and date of next procedure
• specialist skills required, e.g. mechanical, electrical, fluid engineering
• personnel involved
• equipment status, e.g. running, shutdown, isolated
• task list with estimated time and actual time for each task
• tools, equipment and materials required
• health and safety requirements including personal protective equipment (PPE)
• item checked, tested, handover
• task report including the identification of any further maintenance needs.
Task 2
You need to: Document all the health and safety requirements when undertaking maintenance
activities. This must include information on:

• Isolation and permit to work systems, working in confined spaces and at heights.
• Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at Work Regulations 1992
• Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998
• Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR)

Task 3
Make the proper Preparations for your maintenance activities:

Obtain available supporting documentation for an engineering maintenance procedure, e.g.


manufacturer’s drawings, parts list, service manual, maintenance documentation,
maintenance/service history, plant register, standing instructions, permit to work, handover
documents, maintenance reports, condition monitoring data.

Select materials, spares and equipment to complete the maintenance activity: hand tools, e.g.
spanners, wire strippers, bearing puller, consumables, e.g. lubricants, electrical wire, replacement
parts, e.g. bearings, filter.

Task 4
Complete a maintenance activity on the Harrison M300 manual centre lathe safely, including:

• disassemble, remove or strip items


• visually inspect components
• repair, replace or replenish as required
• reassemble item
• inspect and test
• complete documentation
• return item to service
• complete any documentation
