The Clockmaker’s Secret (500 words)

In the heart of a quiet village, tucked between two rolling hills, stood a crooked
little shop with ticking sounds that echoed even on windless days. Above the
door, a wooden sign read: “Eliot’s Timepieces – Every Clock Has a Soul.”
Eliot, the owner, was a grey-bearded man with gentle eyes and fingers stained
with brass and oil. He had lived in the village longer than anyone remembered.
His clocks were unlike any other. Some ticked backward. Others chimed at odd
hours. One spun its hands endlessly in circles.
Most villagers thought Eliot was strange. Children, in particular, were warned not
to linger near his shop. “He speaks to clocks,” they whispered.
But one child didn’t listen.
Lila, age eleven, was curious beyond measure. She loved puzzles, music, and
mysteries. One rainy afternoon, she stood outside Eliot’s door, listening to the
cacophony within. Gathering courage, she entered.
The room was alive with sound—hundreds of clocks, each beating its own
rhythm. Eliot looked up from a disassembled timepiece and smiled.
“Pick a clock,” he said.
Lila’s eyes scanned the shelves. Her fingers stopped at a small, silver clock with
no hands. “This one.”
“Good choice,” Eliot nodded. “Now, listen.”
She brought it to her ear.
A hum, low and deep, vibrated in her bones. Then a whisper: “You are more than
you believe.”
Startled, she dropped it. “It spoke!”
Eliot chuckled. “Clocks remember things we forget. They whisper truths we no
longer hear.”
Every week, Lila returned. She listened to clocks that said, “Forgive yourself.”
“Speak your truth.” “Fear is a story. You can change it.”
One morning, she arrived to find the door unlocked but the shop empty. Eliot was
gone. On his workbench sat the silver clock. It ticked for the first time.
Beside it lay a note: “The clocks speak for those who forget to listen. It’s your
turn now.”
Years passed.
The shop changed hands—into Lila’s.
Children no longer feared it. They lined up with wide eyes and open hearts, each
choosing a clock. Some heard laughter. Some heard sorrow. All heard something
true.
No one knew where Eliot went. Some said he turned into a clock himself. Others
believed he had moved on to teach forgotten truths elsewhere.
But Lila knew the truth: he had given her the most precious gift of all—not time,
but understanding.
And every now and then, when the shop was quiet and the moonlight slipped in
just right, the silver clock whispered again.
