Preparation
ACCESS CONNECTION ROAD TO ASIR
2ND INDUSTRIAL CITY
Shibh Al Jazira Contracting Co.
1. Area Cleanliness:
o Channel slopes, bottoms, or other areas to be protected with riprap, boulders, soil
riprap, or void-filled riprap shall be free of brush, trees, stumps, and other
objectionable material.
o The surface must be graded to a smooth, compacted surface as shown on the
DRAWINGS.
2. Excavation:
o BOC (Contractor) shall excavate areas to receive riprap to the subgrade level as
shown on the DRAWINGS, accounting for granular bedding.
o BOC shall excavate areas to receive boulders, soil riprap, or void-filled riprap to
the specified depth (no bedding material is required for boulders, soil riprap, or
void-filled riprap).
3. Subgrade Materials:
o The subgrade must be stable. Unsuitable materials must be removed and replaced
as Muck Excavation in accordance with Section 31 23 00: Excavation and Fill
for subgrade that has been excavated in undisturbed soil.
4. Compaction:
o Additional compaction is not required unless specified by the CONSULTANT.
o If the subgrade is built up with embankment material, it must be compacted to
95% maximum density (per ASTM D698).
5. Bedding:
o Once the subgrade is acceptable, bedding material shall be placed immediately
and leveled to the specified elevation shown on the DRAWINGS.
o The bedding material shall be replaced and graded at the CONTRACTOR’s
expense if disturbed.
6. Contamination:
o In-place bedding materials must not be contaminated with soils, debris, or
vegetation before the riprap is placed. If contaminated, the bedding material must
be removed and replaced at the CONTRACTOR’s expense.
Placement of Riprap
1. Machine-Placed Riprap:
o Riprap shall be placed on the prepared slope or channel bottom to produce a
reasonably well-graded mass of stone with minimal voids.
o Riprap must be machine-placed unless otherwise stated in the DRAWINGS or
SPECIFICATIONS.
o Riprap must be placed in conjunction with embankment construction to avoid
delays in construction.
2. Slope Placement:
o When placing riprap on a slope, the placement shall begin at the bottom and
proceed upward.
ACCESS CONNECTION ROAD TO ASIR
2ND INDUSTRIAL CITY
Shibh Al Jazira Contracting Co.
Hand-Placed Riprap:
1. Placement Method:
o Hand placement of riprap shall be required when the depth of riprap is less than 2
times the nominal stone size or when indicated by the DRAWINGS or
SPECIFICATIONS.
o After machine placement, hand placement or rearranging by mechanical
equipment may be required to ensure a uniform surface and the specified depth of
riprap.
2. Placement Requirements:
o The stones must be placed in close contact, with larger stones at the bottom.
Smaller stones shall fill the gaps between them.
1. Burial of Riprap:
o Where riprap is designated to be buried, place excavated material free from trash
and organic matter into riprap voids by washing and rodding.
o Excessive washing of materials into the stream should be avoided.
o A 6-inch layer of topsoil should be placed over the filled riprap area once the
voids are filled.
ACCESS CONNECTION ROAD TO ASIR
2ND INDUSTRIAL CITY
Shibh Al Jazira Contracting Co.
Boulders:
1. Placement of Boulders:
o Boulders shall be placed on the prepared subgrade in a way that minimizes voids
between them. Voids exceeding 4 inches shall be chinked (filled with smaller
stones).
2. Grouted Boulders:
o If grouted, follow the procedures outlined in Section 31 37 19 for grouted
boulders and stacked grouted boulders.
Void-Filled Riprap:
Feature Boulders:
1. Placement:
o Feature boulders shall be placed and rotated into their final position as directed by
the CONSULTANT to achieve the desired aesthetic result.
Work Methodology:
1. Survey:
o Survey setting out should be done prior to placing stones for the riprap as per the
approved DRAWINGS.
2. Subgrade Preparation:
o The subgrade material should be compacted, ensuring no loose material is present
before placing the stones.
