WAVE BEHAVIOR AND BOUNDARY CONDITIONS
INSTRUCTIONS: Please follow the links below, follow the instructions given and answer the questions as directed
below in your journal or type in your answers in this document in a different color and submit your
assignment in Canvas.

Period 5
PART I:
1. Go to [Link] → Waves → Lesson 3: Behavior of
Waves
2. Lesson 3a: Boundary Behavior
a. Take notes in your journal. Make sure to include the following:
i. Define ALL of the terms in bold red text.
Boundary Behavior: Behavior of waves after reaching end of a medium.
Boundary: Interference of 2 mediums.
Fixed End: End of rope that cannot move.
Incidence Pulse: Pulse that reaches the boundary.
Reflected Pulse: Pulse that bounces of hole.
ii. Include ALL diagrams with labels as needed.
b. Watch all 3 animations provided. Be sure to include a brief description.
i. Pulse reflected, inverted at fixed end.
ii. Pusle reflected at free end.
iii. Pulse reflected, inverted at boundary.
c. Compare and contrast fixed and free end reflection.
Fixed end reflects causing the wave to invert unlike the free end where it does not.
d. Complete either Case 1 OR Case 2 in the Check Your Understanding Questions. Will
not, it is going into a less dense area and a free end.
1. Faster
2. Same
3. Greater
4. Same
3. Lesson 3b: Reflection, Refraction, and Diffraction
a. Take notes in your journal. Make sure to include the following:
i. Define ALL of the terms in bold red text.
1. Law of Reflection: Waves always reflect at angle of approach.
2. Refraction: Change of direction of waves across or through a medium.
3. Diffraction: Change of direction of waves around barriers.
ii. Include ALL diagrams with labels as needed.
b. Compare and contrast reflection, refraction, and diffraction.
Reflection is when the wave is sent back from a barrier, a refraction on the other
hand is a change of direction through a medium, and diffraction is the change of direction
around barriers.
4. Lesson 3c: Interference of Waves
a. Take notes in your journal. Make sure to include the following:
i. Define ALL of the terms in bold red text.
1. Wave Interference: 2 waves meet along the same medium.
2. Constructive Interference: Displaces wave in the same direction.
3. Destructive Interference: Displaced wave in an opposite direction.
ii. Include ALL diagrams with labels as needed.
b. How can you tell if waves will interfere constructively or destructively? If they are the
same direction amplitude, it is constructive interference.
c. Complete both questions in the Check Your Understanding section.
1. A:C
2. B:C
3. C:D
4. B:D
5. E:D
6. F:D
PART II:
5. Go to [Link] → Waves → Lesson 4: Standing Waves
6. Lesson 4a: Traveling Waves vs. Standing Waves
a. Watch the included animation. Be sure to include a brief description. The string
vibrates with the fourth harmonic.
b. What is the difference between standing waves and travelling waves?
i. Traveling waves are not confined but standing waves are. ii.
Include ALL diagrams with labels as needed.
