Effective Solutions for Pipeline Scaling

The document discusses the issue of scale formation in pipelines, which can lead to reduced productivity and even stock death. It outlines various treatment methods for scaling, including reducing water hardness, using sequestering agents, and periodic cleaning, as well as the importance of water analysis to determine the best approach. Additionally, it suggests that replacing pipelines may be more cost-effective in some cases compared to ongoing treatment.

Solving the Scaling Problem

Treat pipelines

period, or the blockage is not major, it could be W50
worthwhile just cleaning the pipeline periodically.
Complete blockages can be treated with acid.
Hydrochloric acid will dissolve carbonate scale. If metal
pipework is involved, ‘inhibited’ hydrochloric acid must be
used to minimise corrosion or attack the metal surface.
Once you have determined the frequency with which
scaling becomes a problem, you know when treatment
should occur. In a long pipeline, isolate or break the line
near the blockage and empty it of water. Introduce acid at
the upstream end, and allow sufficient time for this to
work. Thoroughly wash the line with clean water when
finished. If practical, recirculating the acid is the most
effective way to remove scale.
Flushing with an acid solution before the problem
becomes too great should be considered.

Replace pipeline
The cost of treating the water supply or cleaning out the
pipeline must be weighed up against replacing the line.
For example, if the encrustation takes a long time to
develop and the pipeline is short in length, it may be
more cost effective to simply replace the blocked line.
Replacing the pipeline with a larger diameter pipe may
extend its life before further blockages occur.
