II/ OBJECTIVES OF MAIN LESSONS IN A UNIT
Unit 1: FAMILY LIFE

Lesson 1: Getting started - Household chores

Objectives: by the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Gain an overview about the topic family life.
- Recognize and understand vocabulary related to family roles and responsibilities.
2. Core competence:
- Develop communication skills
- Demonstrating teamwork skills
- Actively join in class activities
3. Personal qualities:
- Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and routines.
- Be aware of responsibilities towards family.

Lesson 2: Language
By the end of this lesson, students will be able gain:
1. Knowledge:
- Differentiate and pronounce the consonant blends /br/, /kr/, and /tr/
correctly.
- Define the meaning of vocabularies about family life and apply them in
sentences.
- Distinguish and use present simple and present continuous to describe
family routines.
2. Core competence:
- Communicate information about their own families.
- Recognize and use common grammatical structures related to family
relationships.
3. Personal qualities:
- Be aware of responsibilities towards family.

Lesson 3: Reading
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Identify and define the meaning of vocabulary related to family life in
the text.
 - Identify the main ideas and supporting details in texts to answer
questions about family life.
2. Core competence:
- Analyze the reading passage, identify key themes and messages, and
draw inferences.
- Work and communicate effectively in groups to discuss the reading and
complete activities.
3. Personal qualities:
- Reflect on their own family experiences and values.
- Be willing to share household chores in their family.

Lesson 4: Speaking
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Explain why children should or shouldn't do housework.
- Discuss and express their opinions about why children should or
shouldn't do the housework.
2. Core competence:
- Speaking clearly and fluently.
- Forming opinions and expressing them clearly.
3. Personal qualities:
- Recognise the benefits of doing housework for children;
- Understand why children should or shouldn’t do housework;
- Be willing to share housework with their families

Lesson 5: Listening
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Listen for details and specific information in a talk show about family
life.
- Apply the language they have learnt in the listening in a speaking task
about their own experiences.
2. Core competence:
- Improve listening comprehension skills, identifying key words and note-
taking.
- Work effectively in pairs or small groups.
- Share ideas and perspectives respectfully.
3. Personal qualities:
- Recognise how our families have helped us achieve success in our lives.
- Show gratitude towards our families.

Lesson 6: Writing
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Identify common family routines.
- Write simple sentences or paragraphs to describe family routines from
inferred information from the texts.
2. Core competence:
- Participate in group discussions about family routines.
- Use correct grammar and punctuation in their writing.
3. Personal qualities:
- Be willing to share housework in the family.

Lesson 7: Communication and Culture / CLIL

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Express opinions in a conversation about whether family members
should spend time together.
- List British family values and compare them to similar Vietnamese
values.
2. Core competence:
- Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and team work.
- Access and consolidate information from a variety of sources.
- Actively join in class activities.
3. Personal qualities:
- Be more respectful of Vietnamese and British family values.
- Be able and willing to embrace those family values.

Lesson 8: Looking back & Project

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge:
- Review pronouncing consonant blends /br/, /kr/, /tr/.
- Review the vocabulary and grammar of Unit 1.
- Do research on Family Day in Viet Nam or other countries in the world
and give a group presentation about it.
2. Core competence:
- Participate and communicate effectively in group discussions.
3. Personal qualities:
- Be more creative when doing the project.
- Develop self-study skills.
- Develop empathy, understanding, and respect for diverse family lives in
various cultures
III/ BOOK REVIEW
1. Language knowledge:
a. GETTING STARTED
- Includes a conversation with a topic related to the main topic of the unit.
- Students will practice some exercises to have a better understand of the content
of the conversation.
b. PRONUNCIATION
- Emphasizes correct pronunciation through audio materials and activities,
helping students develop clear and understandable speech.
c. VOCABULARY
- The book introduces and builds vocabulary related to various topics, ensuring
students acquire a rich lexicon for communication.
d. GRAMMAR
- It covers essential grammatical structures and rules, enabling students to form
accurate and meaningful sentences.
e. READING
- The reading will follow the topic of the lesson, helps students expand their
vocabulary and reinforce reading comprehension skills.
- There is also group discussion activities for students to give their opinions
through the reading.
f. REVIEW
- The review will include knowledge from Pronunciation, Vocabulary and
Grammar.
- The goal is to review what students have learned. In addition, consolidating
knowledge again before walking through the new unit.
g. LANGUAGE FOCUS
- Mostly focus on students' reading and writing skills. Besides, there are some
exercises on listening and speaking skills.
2. SKILLS
- Reading: utilizes diverse text types (stories, articles, dialogues,...)
- Writing: guides students in various writing genres(essays, letters, reports,...)
- Listening: through authentic audio materials, students develop their listening
comprehension skills and learn to extract key information from spoken English.
- Speaking: encourages active participation in discussions, presentations, and
role-plays, building confidence and fluency in spoken English.
3. BOOK'S STRUCTURE
- Structured logically for ESL, after 2-3 units, there is a revision for
pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and 4 primary skills.
- After the last review, there is a glossary page for students to enrich their
knowledge, improve their understanding of the language.
4. THEME
- Relevant to students, age-appropriate, culturally appropriate, and in line with
the new curriculum.
- Reflect real-life situations, making it easier for students to relate to and practice
English in practical contexts
5. PRESENTING
- Text Size: The text size is appropriate, easy to read, and suitable for students
aged 15-16.
- Key sections like vocabulary, grammar, or questions are highlighted.
- Color: The color scheme is well-thought-out—not too bright or overwhelming,
but still lively.
- Readability: The fonts are clear and readable.
- Images: The images used in the book are realistic and relatable.

- Easy for students to grasp and perform.
- Not time-consuming - teachers can create additional activities outside of the
book for students to do.
7. STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES:
a) Strengths:
- Curriculum-aligned: this book meet the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and
Training's latest English curriculum standards for 10th grade.
- Comprehensive: Global Success 10 covers all four core language skills
(reading, writing, listening, and speaking) with a good balance of theory and
practice.
- Engaging presentation: a visually appealing design with colorful illustrations,
real-life images, and varied text types.
- Authentic materials: incorporates authentic reading passages and listening
materials, exposing students to real-world English usage.
- Focus on communication: The activities and exercises prioritize
communicative competence, encouraging students to use English actively.
- Theme-based learning: Units revolve around relevant and engaging themes that
connect to students' lives and the world around them.
- Appropriate content and logical structure: age appropriate in both content and
form, the book's structure is arranged logically, consistent with the lesson
content.
- Appropriate to students' abilities: includes exercises that require
communication skills in expressing opinions on a specific topic. In addition,
there is a project section that helps students develop soft skills.
 - High interactivity: The activities in the book are designed to be very
interactive, encouraging students to engage in group exercises, discussions, and
real-life scenarios.
b) Weaknesses:
- Fast-paced: the amount of content and the pace of instruction can be
overwhelming for some students, especially those with weaker English
foundations.
- Limited teacher support: supporting resources for teachers (e.g., teacher guides,
assessment tools) might be lacking.
- Cultural relevance: some content may not fully resonate with the specific
cultural context of Vietnamese students.
- Assessment focus: the textbook's structure may lead to an overemphasis on
traditional assessments.
- Difficult grammar knowledge: quite heavy on theory, making students easily
discouraged.
- Imbalance skills improvement: the book mainly focuses on students' reading
and writing skills rather than listening skills, which creates an imbalance in
improving students' skills.
- Lack of clear differentiation: some activities may be either too easy or too
difficult for certain students, making it challenging to differentiate according to
varying levels of ability.
- Limited flexibility in content adjustment: some lessons may lack flexibility in
adapting content to meet the specific needs of different student groups.

- Underutilization of technology: the integration of technology into the learning
process could be further developed.
