Should Kids Get Paid for Chores?

The document discusses the pros and cons of paying children for doing household chores, highlighting that while monetary rewards can encourage children to help and teach them the value of hard work, they may also foster a sense of entitlement and dependency on rewards. It references research suggesting that rewards can diminish intrinsic motivation and emphasizes the importance of children helping out of sincerity rather than for payment. Ultimately, the author suggests that while rewards can be beneficial, they should not be the primary method of encouraging children to contribute to household tasks.

Topic: Children should be paid for doing chores

Chores is a job that is quite difficult for most housewives, moreover work such as washing
clothes, washing dishes, sweeping, and so on, done simultaneously is very tiring for parents. The
presence of children, especially diligent children, can sometimes lighten the burden, but not a few
lazy children are even reluctant to help their parents. So parents have to find ways for their children
to help them. Giving rewards to children can be an alternative that is commonly done by parents
when they want to ask for help from their children. However, this can be detrimental to both the
parents and the children themselves.
Rewards in the form of money are generally given with the reason that children want to do the
requested work, due to thinking like this so parents do it. By giving money can make children
continue to expect rewards for every job as a result when asked to do something they will expect a
reward and not do it voluntarily.
Alfie Kohn in his book Unconditional Parenting says, "a large body of research has found that
children and adults are equally less successful at many tasks when they are offered a reward for
doing them - or for doing them well." Students tend to learn better when there is no "A" to get.
Rewards are not very effective in improving the quality of work or people's learning. That is why
the giving of money in the form of money to children should be avoided by parents so that children
can do something with a sense of sincerity.
Among the losses generated by giving rewards to children also has benefits, including being
able to introduce children to the meaning of hard work from a young age. So they will appreciate
every money they earn. Family finance expert Andrew Daniels thinks paying kids for chores can
help develop a child's entrepreneurial spirit. “I think it's really important for kids to learn how to
make money,” says Daniels, “and a big part of that is learning to trade energy for money. That's
where getting paid to do certain tasks can be a great thing."
Another benefit obtained is that when giving money to children, they will have their own
income. We can take advantage of this by teaching children to save money to buy their needs, be it
clothes or their other needs, with their own hard-earned money making them feel proud that they
can buy something with the results of their hard work. This learning can have many benefits for
children as they grow up they will get used to working if they want to earn something Gregg
Murset, a certified financial planner and father of six, agrees that children should earn money for
homework. He is the co-founder and CEO of BusyKid, the company behind the app of the same
name that lets parents easily pay their kids for chores and lets kids sort their money into
manageable categories so they can save, spend, and share (or donate ).
In conclusion, although giving rewards to children when they do household chores can make
children have their own income and train children's independence from an early age, this can make
children dependent so they will continue to ask for rewards when doing something. In my opinion,
this thinking can make it difficult for children to help others if they are not rewarded, this happens
because children are used to getting rewarded for what they do.

Critical Writing

A. Background description (descriptive statement)

1 Describe the idea proposed The idea discusses the giving of monetary rewards when
in the reading text above parents ask their children to do household chores and the
impact it has
B. Critical Statement
2 Apply the idea into a different In different situations, giving rewards in the form of
situation (whether it works or money to children can have a positive impact, this
not; and what factors which happens because of the feeling of being valued. When
make it work or not) children are rewarded and praised for their efforts, it is
because they think that what they do is appreciated by
their parents. On the other hand, if the reward is given
because of the work that was successfully completed, they
will do something just because of money, not because they
are sincere to help their parents.
Justify why the process exist Giving rewards in the form of money and praise given
after children do household chores will make them feel
that they are needed by their parents so that they will feel
like they are a helper for their parents. Thinking like this
will encourage children's motivation to do something for
what is given.
Suggest an alternative If the situation requires parents to reward children in the
approach based on such form of money after doing household chores. To
situation minimize the negative impact, the alternative approach is
that parents should give them an understanding that
money is not everything, their role in helping parents is
very beneficial so that children will feel valued and feel
that their role in helping parents is also taken into account
by parents.
3 Discuss the strength and This idea can be successful if children do the work
weaknesses of the idea accompanied by a sense of sincerity, because then they
(why it works or not work) will assume that the money given is solely to appreciate
their efforts. However, the idea will not work if the child
does something for the money, they will see all the work
done with a source of income for them.
4 Demonstrate how the idea The idea for this idea is often found, especially in older
links to other ideas in the field people who have more income. They feel that by giving
money, problems can be easily solved, for example when
parents need something but due to time constraints so they
need something instant so they ask their children by
offering rewards without asking for their help by
positioning that their child's role is needed ( persuading
and seducing), they immediately ask for help by offering
money because they feel in a hurry.
5 Compare and constrast the idea The idea should not be the main thing but positioned as a
with other ideas last resort. If you want to get help from children, parents
should ask for help first by persuading or seducing them
because with this the child will do something sincerely
without expecting anything in return. However, if
children are asked to do something in return, they will do
something for money reasons
6 Demonstrate whether the This idea is a recent idea because when many children
idea is up-to-date or relevant want to do something when given money, it is different
from previous children who did help their parents because
they were sincere or because they were afraid to refuse
their parents' orders. Moreover, at this time children
spend more time playing gadgets so that when asked for
help they will feel disturbed which requires parents to
offer rewards, so that the idea is especially relevant today.
7 Evaluate the idea by providing The idea should not be the main choice because based on
evidence the supporting arguments in the essay it can be concluded
that the idea brings more harm than use. For example,
many children are given money so that they do the work
they are given, they find it difficult to do work because of
sincerity.
8 Create new perspectives or Giving rewards can be done on the condition that the
arguments parents first have given them an understanding that what
they are doing will be very helpful and lighten the burden
on the parents so that the children will feel sorry for their
parents' requests. In other words, after parents use a
feeling approach to children.
C. Judgment

9 Take positive and negative In this idea the advantage is that children will feel that to
approach to the idea and make money they need to work so they value it and don't
interrogate them waste their money. This is very beneficial for them so that
they are not easy to ask for and waste money. However,
the negative impact of the idea can make children feel that
everything costs money so that they will only help if they
are rewarded. I think these two views can be combined
when parents actually approach their children before
asking them for help. Feelings of compassion for children
should be used so that children will get rid of their
laziness because they feel sorry and want to help their
parents
10 Provide evidence of judgment
