Field-Oriented Control (FOC)
Introduction :
FOC is a control Scheme for induction Motor.
FOC Scheme based on obtaining the rotor flux.
FOC acquires all parameters of the rotating frame and transforms them to
rotor flux.
Working of FOC in Induction Motor:
In induction Motor a d – q Coordinates reference frame locked to the
motor flux.
Space vector is used to achieve decoupling between the motor flux and
torque.
Motor Flux and Torque can be separately controlled by –
Stator Direct Axis, Rotor Direct Axis
Classification of FOC -
Indirect FOC (Rotor flux vector is measured by using the Current
Model)
Direct FOC (Rotor flux vector is measured by using voltage equation)
Advantages of FOC –
Improve torque response.
Torque control at low frequencies and low speeds.
Dynamic speed accuracy.
Vector Control Principles
Principles of Vector control is discuss with this diagram:
Working Principle
Motor Phase currents ia, ib, ic are converted to idss and iqss in the stationary
reference frame.
These are then converted to the synchronously rotating reference frame d-q
currents , ids and iqs.
In the controller two inverse transformation are performed:
From the synchronous d-q to the stationary d-q reference frame.
From d* - q* to a*, b*, c*.

Features of Vector Control
Transient Response will be fast because torque control by iqs does
not affect the flux.
Vector control allows for speed control in all four quadrants
(without additional control elements)
Automatically limits operation to the stable region.
Conclusions
Vector Control/F.O.C. are used in high performance drives.
More computational effort and high speed processors are suitable.
More precise digital vector control algorithm.
