PERIOD OF PLAN: Week ending Friday 2nd May, 2025

GRADE: GRADE 10
SUBJECT: Physics
TOPIC: Heat and Temperature

SUBTOPIC:
-Introduction to heat and temperature
-Definitions of specific heat capacity and heat capacity
-The relationship between heat energy, mass, specific heat capacity, and temperature change
-Application of the formula EH = mc ΔѲ and EH = mc ΔT in problem-solving
-Experimental determination of specific heat capacity using the electrical method
-Experimental determination of specific heat capacity using the method of mixtures
-Analysis and comparison of results obtained from both methods

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
1. Students will be able to distinguish between specific heat capacity and heat capacity by
accurately defining both terms and providing examples of each in real-world contexts.
2. Students will demonstrate the ability to apply the relationship EH = mc ΔѲ or EH = mc ΔT by
solving at least three problems involving calculations of heat transfer in various materials.
3. Students will determine the specific heat capacity of metals and liquids using the electrical
method and the method of mixtures, achieving a minimum of 80% accuracy in their
experimental results.

CONTENT/CONCEPTS:
Knowledge:
Definition and difference between heat capacity and specific heat capacity
Understanding of heat transfer and its factors
Skills:
Calculation of heat transfer using the formula
Conducting experiments to determine specific heat capacity
Steps and Methods:
Introduction to concepts
Group discussions on definitions and applications
Problem-solving sessions
Conducting experiments in small groups
Analyzing and comparing results

Vocabulary:
Heat, temperature, specific heat capacity, heat capacity, energy, mass
Brief Notes with Examples:
Heat capacity is the amount of heat required to change the temperature of an object; for example, water
has a high heat capacity.
Specific heat capacity is the heat required to change the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1°C; for
example, copper has a low specific heat capacity compared to water.

ACTIVITIES:
Day 1: Lecture and discussion on heat and temperature, definitions, and problem-solving.
Day 2: Conduct experiments using the electrical method and the method of mixtures to determine
specific heat capacity.

DIFFERENTIATED STRATEGIES:
Group students by skill level to enhance peer support during problem-solving.
Provide additional resources and visual aids for students who need further explanation.
Offer advanced problems for students who grasp concepts quickly.

RESOURCES OR MATERIALS:
Textbooks and reference materials on thermodynamics
Laboratory equipment for experiments (calorimeters, heating elements, measuring devices)
Worksheets for problem-solving and data recording

FORMATIVE EVALUATION:
Assessment Questions:
Define specific heat capacity
How would you calculate the heat transfer when heating a metal?
During the experiment, what factors could affect your results when determining specific heat capacity?

REFLECTION:
At the conclusion of the lessons, reflect on student engagement and understanding of concepts.
Assess whether the specific objectives were met and identify areas for improvement in future lessons.
Consider the effectiveness of the differentiated strategies and how they supported diverse learners in
the classroom.
