My RBI Grade B Strategy

Name: AG
Attempt: First Attempt
Back Ground: [Link] from IIT, Few years of Job Ex, Civils Preparation

Brief Intro:
Gave Civils Interview this year, Final results were announced on May 23, couldn’t
clear so devastated. Couldn’t give another attempt this year because Prelims was just
3 days after the final result so decided to skip. My friend was preparing for RBI he told
me that the last date for application was still not over so I applied. Effectively 40 days
time was there to Phase 1 and another 20 days for Phase 2.

I am already familiar with Economic and Social issues and Finance, Budgets, Economic
Surveys only new thing for me was Management

First 10 days – Edu tap Management classes in 2x speed and read their concept notes
as a revision

Phase 1
Current Affairs
1. Affairs Cloud Q&A pdf of 3 months (each around 300 pages) – Glance through
them 2/3 times – never tried to byheart but made myself familiar with content
2. Edu tap Schemes and RBI news magazines
3. My Civils Interview preparation notes for some current affairs
4. YouTube Videos of EDU TAP on RBI, Schemes, Reports etc (2x speed) including
some marathon sessions
5. Governor 6 speeches – When I get bored (Around 4 Questions came from
them)
Quant
1. Olive Board test series (10 tests) – Solved all of them and practiced a lot from
Edu tap live solving sessions (in 2x speed) for concepts that I was less
comfortable
2. Squares, cubes, tables, formulas etc.
3. From test series I realised choosing right DI is crucial to clear sectional cutoff so
implemented effectively in the phase 1 exam

Reasoning
1. Extensive practice for 3 days from test series – Identified weak areas – Watched
and practiced those puzzle formations from Edu tap live sessions (Only
observed the way they are solving – And adopted some of those methods that
suited me while solving)
2. Learnt to choose puzzles wisely because in test series choosing wrong ones
resulted in loss of marks and time

English
1. Only test series, very comfortable with this section. I always attempt all 30 Q.
2. Take a pause of 30 seconds before starting this section and be mindful while
reading the comprehension it would save time otherwise you have to read the
passage ¾ times which would cost time.

Exam day (Phase 1) – Afternoon session

• Morning session people told us that paper was tough so mentally prepared
• Mouse was not working in the middle of CA section- Very frustrated – Couldn’t
read 13 Q – Later realised that 6 of them were easy – Got around 34 Marks in
this section
• English – Attempted all – Got around 23 Marks
• Reasoning – One puzzle solved, stuck at second puzzle but was able to solve –
Around 13 Marks
• Quant – Around 12 Marks

Phase 2 – 20 days time left

FM
1. Revised Management again quickly – But time was not sufficient so I did what I
could
2. Finance part – Basics from Edu tap pdfs
3. CA – RBI annual report – This year it was easy to predict because emphasis on
“climate change” was all over RBI policies either in G20 or RBI annual report (It
has an entire article on what India can do to mitigate climate change how to
finance this transition)
4. So prepared “quotes, data, examples” for Climate and finance themes

ESI
1. Economy – 2 small pages of economic data, quotes, conclusions from economic
survey and RBI annual report
2. Social – Data and examples from CA magazines of various institutions and Civil
service notes – 2 Page notes – Schemes for various sections (Women, children,
elderly, tribes… etc) – Some themes (Poverty, Financial inclusion, Climate
change)
Essay
1. Essay: Experience in writing essay from Civil services – Essay was also on
Climate change – wrote around 550 words (If I remember correctly) – I was
already prepared with data, quotes and examples – Started the essay with a
quote of Mahatma Gandhi ended with a Native American Proverb – Probably
would have created a good impression to the evaluator.
2. Precis: Read the rules of writing Precis and saw some videos on how to write
(Giving title, writing in single paragraph, using our own words etc)
3. Comprehension: This time it was on complex theme – Questions were quite
difficult to understand – So mindfully read and understood the Passage twice –
Answered all 5 questions with my own words and as far as possible touching
the theme mentioned in the paragraph

Phase 2 exam prep:

• Practiced typing using Mechanical key board for 2/3 hours, they are very hard
and Exam interface was worst. Editing is difficult on the interface so make
minimal mistakes
• 27 Minutes for 15 Marker, 18 Minutes for 10 Marker – First 3\4 minutes of
brain storming and writing points, intro, conclusion, quotes, data on paper then
typing
FM – Average attempt – Made some blunders in some MCQs – Expecting 35 to 40
marks in objective – Attempted all 4 Questions (didn’t choose management one
instead wrote RBI direct scheme question)

ESI – Good Attempt – MCQs were tough – Made 2 blunders – Expecting around 30
Marks in objective – Attempted all 4 questions with very good content, quotes, data
etc.

English: Very Good Attempt – Attempted essay first, Precis and Comprehension.

Interview

Sources: Read Mint, The Hindu – RBI website extensively, RBISB textbook on functions
of RBI, Thorough preparation of Biodata from my Civils interview notes, Discussion
with friends helped reduce anxiety
Question asked
1. Some fun banter about my surname
2. Asked about civils preparation
3. Electoral Bond scheme- CJI opinion – Gave the answer
4. Panchamrit goals – Told all 5
5. Which department is your interest and some basic finance questions – Average
answers
6. ICRR and reasons
7. Apex regulatory council that is present in India – Told about FSDC and they are
satisfied and asked about its composition – Gave the answer
8. New rule of cricket in this world cup – New ball from both ends
9. Why ball swings in air – Bernoulli principle
10. Some questions that I might have forgotten.

Results announced – Cleared

That’s my journey in brief. There were many doubts during preparation and I was not
at all confident that I could pull it off but somehow, I managed. The failure in civils
gave me the motivation to clear RBI.

journey.
