BUSMAN106 – 1B

Short Meetings, Yet Big Insights

Time flies so fast. It has only been three months since the first meeting in
BUSMAN106 happened, yet lots of business production and operation management
learnings were already instilled in my mind. As an accountancy student whose field
is also inclined with business and managing financial resources, I was able to
acquire more knowledge on how to effectively and efficiently maximize the resource
that I have. The learnings that I have instilled are not only helpful towards my future
career, but also in my daily lives, such as doing cost-cuttings in my weekly budget
to ensure that I will only prioritize purchasing products/services that are considered
as my needs. Overall, these practical applications of production and operations
management, allowed me to become more mindful, resourceful, and strategic in
handling everyday decisions.

The lessons that were discussed in this subject are diverse—it was able to
cover the basics of two fields: production and operation management. First, the
course started by discussing a quick background on what operational management.
This overview involves the objective of operational management as well as its
history. Through learning this, I was able to grasped how operations in the business
industry evolves and how does these changes have a significant impact in the field
of business.

Second, the reporters had an in-depth report about product and service for
two consecutive sessions. The discussion specifically covered the characteristics of
a product and service and the importance of having a product or service design.
Upon learning these lessons, I have learned that businesses assess carefully their
products/services before launching it to the market. Although this step is time
consuming and may increase the cost, it is still beneficial to businesses as this well
help them know more about their customers and avoid excessive waste in the
production process.
Third, before the midterms examination and production tour occurred, the
assigned reporters discussed about forecasting in operations management. This
lesson focused on the different methods to conduct forecasting and how we can
apply these methods effectively, since each method are applied in different
scenarios depending on what the company wants to focus. Learning the different
forecasting techniques and how to measure effective capacity is quite challenging,
since it requires students to memorize its formulas and how it should be applied in
the given scenario. However, it is a valuable lesson, since it is truly useful,
especially when the company aims to achieve a greater sale in the future.

Fourth, a week after the midterms examination, the class went to a

production tour that was held either within Zamboanga City or at Cebu City. During
these times, I was able to see the actual production process of known
manufacturing companies at Cebu, while at the same time gathering valuable
insights that came from the employees and owners of the companies. Moreover, for
the local tour, upon hearing the experiences of my classmates who are part of the
local tour, I was awed to know that some of the products that I consume are
produce in my beloved city. Lastly, their shared experience allowed me to realize
that ECOZONE have a huge potential in terms of exports and even become like
other big cities in the country.

Fifth, the finals of the second semester started with the discussion about
capacity planning. The lesson focuses on how much a company must produce to
avoid shortage and overage in the production process. It is also done to ensure that
customer needs are able to address especially in times where the need of a certain
product/service is vital. Through this lesson, I was able to understand that not only
products involve in capacity planning, but also service. However, capacity planning
in service is more challenging compared to products.

Sixth, the succeeding lessons in this subject focused on the how to produce
and where to produce and aspect of operations management. This aspect mainly
speaks about ways on how to maximize the production process, especially in its
efficiency in time while at the same time maintaining its quality. With these, I was
able to acknowledge that it is necessary that raw materials are accessible to its
market to remain its quality even after transporting. Moreover, in terms of
manpower, it is truly needed to also assess them and their work to ensure that they
are able to meet the required standards and contribute effectively to the overall
production goals.

Lastly, the last reporters discussed about quality. The lessons in this aspect
majority focused on total quality management and ethics in quality management.
After the discussion, I was able to gather insights that a company should also
embody ethical practices to maintain their integrity and image. Customers
nowadays are not only focused on the products, but also sees the background of
the company. Therefore, there should always be a balance between quality and
ethics to maintain the trust of the consumers and to have a contribution in the
society. Additionally, continuous improvements is imperative in a company to
ensure that changes in the market are also addressed—leading to a business
profitability.

Although the number of sessions in my BUSMAN106 class is shorter

compared to other sections, the knowledge that I have learned is incomparable.
Apart from the efforts of the student-reporters, our teacher made BUSMAN106 more
insightful because of her experience and knowledge in the field. From realistic
examples to practical tasks, the course became the course became more engaging
and easier to relate to, despite its technicalities.

Overall, my learning experience in BUSMAN106 is enriching. It allowed me to

understand how important balance is in terms of productivity and ethics in business.
Machines and unique products are not always the key to get the heart of the
customers—rather, thoughtful balance between efficiency, quality, and ethical
practices that truly makes a difference. Despite the short number of meetings, I was
still able to achieve a solid understanding on the basics of operation management,
which I can apply this in my future endeavors that is related to business and
accounting, as well in my day-to-day activities through maintaining efficiency and
integrity at all times.
