Concentration Measurement Methods

The document outlines various methods for expressing concentration, including strength expression and chemical expression. Key concepts include molarity, molality, normality, and parts per million, each with specific formulas and units of measurement. Molarity is defined as moles of solute per liter of solution, while molality refers to moles of solute per kilogram of solvent, and normality relates to equivalents of solute per liter of solution.

METHODS OF

EXPRESSING
CONCERNTRATION
• STRENGTH EXPRESSION
• CHEMICAL EXPRESSION
CHEMICAL EXPRESSION
• Molarity
• Molality
• Normality
• Parts per million
MOLARITY
• No Of Moles Of Solute Contain In 1000 ml Of Solution
• Molarity Indicated By M
• M=nV Here, M = molarity of the solution n = number of moles of the
solute and V = volume of solution given in terms of litres.
• Its unit is mol/litre

MOLALITY
• No of Moles Of Solute Contained 1000g Of Solvent
• Its Indicated As “m”
• The change in temperature will not affect this unit of concentration
• Its unit is mol/kg.
• Molality (m) = moles of solute/kilograms of solvent
NORMALITY
• No of equivalent of solute in 1 litre of solution
• It denoted as “N”
• Normality = mole of solute/ No of replaceable H+ or OH- ions
• Calculation of Normality in Titration
• N1 V1 = N2 V2
• Where, N1 = Normality of the Acidic solution V1 = Volume of the
Acidic solution N2 = Normality of the basic solution V2 = Volume of
the basic solution
PARTS PER MILLION
• No of Moles of solute contained in 10^6 g of solution
• It is denoted by N.
• FORMULA
• ppm = mass of solute (g) / mass of solution (g) × 10^6
• It is a unit of measurement which expresses the amount of solute
as a proportion of 1 million units of solution.
