Unit no 2 (Micro-organisms)

Answer the following questions

Q1: What do you understand by the word ‘Microorganism’? Describe and explain their habitat.

Ans: ‘Micro’ means very small and ‘Organism’ means living. The minute and tiny organisms are
called micro-organisms.

Habitat:

Micro-organisms cannot be seen with the naked eye but they are present everywhere. Micro-
organisms are found in air, in water, in soil, in food, in our body and on the surface of every
object. When micro-organisms get their required environment they can be grown anywhere.
Some micro-organisms grow very fast in warm, moist and dark places while some other micro-
organisms require living host body to grow.

Q2: Name some disease causing germs with example.

Ans: All micro-organisms that cause diseases are called germs.

Disease causing germs include Bacteria, Virus and Fungi.

Germs and Diseases:

Bacteria: Cholera, Typhoid, TB, Tooth decay etc.

Virus: Common cold, Influenza, Measles, Chicken pox etc.

Fungi: Ringworm, Athlete’s foot, Jock itch etc.

Q4: List at least three measures that protect us against diseases.

Ans:

1. Always wash your hands with soap and water before touching food.
2. Cover your mouth with a handkerchief when you cough or sneeze.
3. If you have a disease that can spread, stay away from other people until you are better.
Q5: Write a detailed note on useful micro-organisms.

Ans: Useful micro-organisms usually include bacteria and fungi.

Uses of micro-organisms are listed here:

1. Yeast is a tiny fungus and is used to make bread.


2. Cheese and yogurt are made from milk with the help of bacteria. In some kind of cheese,
a fungus is added to give it a special flavour.
3. Bacteria are also used to make vinegar.
4. Antibiotics are produced by using bacteria as well.
5. Some bacteria present in the stomach helps in the digestion of food.
