Economics Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module in Dressmaking!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their
personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

What’s In

Sewing is the craft of fastening or attaching objects using stitches made with a
needle and thread. Sewing is one of the oldest of the textile arts. For thousand of years
ago all sewing was done by hand. The invention of sewing machine in the 19th century
and the rise of computerization in 20th century led to mass production and export of
sewn object but hand sewing is still in practice around the world.

FUN FACTS ABOUT SEWING!

Sewing was one of the first skills of Homo Sapiens learnt. Archaeologists
believe that the people used to sew together fur, hide, skin, bark and leaves of plants
for clothing as far back 25,000 years ago.

Early needles were not made of metal. Sewing needles found at a lot of an
ancient archaeologist sites were made of bone and ivory. Metal needles came into
existence much later in the human history.

4000 kinds of sewing machine. By the 20th century more 4000 types of sewing
machine invented. Most of these slowly got lost in times as they were riddled with
many problems. Only one sewing machine that made sewing simple, fun and easy
survived.

 What is it

IDENTIFYING SEWING TOOLS AND THEIR USES

Sewing tools are the most important in all sewing activities either hand sewing
or machine sewing. These sewing tools help you mend, alter or repair your garments
or clothing.

Always remember that in every job you make always use the right tools and
equipment at all times to produce the best result and safety fast work.
This lesson will provide the learners the skills and knowledge in using the
different kinds of sewing tools and equipment that are necessary in any sewing
activities.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Dressmaking – is the art of sewing a beautiful dress from fabric.

Altering – changing portion of garment so that it fits the body.

Cutting tools – used for cutting materials like fabric, paper and thread.

Measuring tools – instruments used in obtaining quantities, dimension or force of

the real word objects.

Drafting tools – are used in drafting the patterns of the garment or clothes.

Marking tools – used to transfer pattern symbols onto the fabric to accurately
make the garment.

Sewing tools – instrument that aid in accomplishing a sewing task.

Measuring Tools Description

A flexible measuring device used in taking

Tape Measure body measurements. The front has the
measurement of 150 centimeters and 60
inches on the other side.

 A small ruler with a sliding guide and is
about six inches long. This gauge is used
Sewing Gauge to measure and mark hem depth, evenly
space button holes, tucks and areas
where other small measurements require
checking, such as pleats and tucks. The
gauge is usually made of metal or plastic.

A ruler measuring 12 inches or even 18

Ruler inches, either clear or solid. It is used for
measuring and drawing straight lines and
cutting lines.

A yardstick is made of smooth, shellacked

Yardstick hardwood or metal. It is used for marking
hemlines and checking grainlines when
laying out the pattern.

Used to measure skirt hem lengths evenly

and accurate methods of marking hems
than yardstick.

Drafting Tools Description

This used in constructing perpendicular
L-square lines, obtaining square corners and it has
two arms connected the longer arm is
twenty-four (24) inches long and the
shorter arm is fourteen (14) inches long.

Hip Curve This is used in shaping the hips, skirt

hemline and other long curved lines.

This is used to shape the depth of the neck

French Curve hole and armhole of the pattern.

 Cutting Tools Description
This used for cutting fabric. It has small
opening in one handle for the thumb and
Shears one larger opening in the other handle for
the four fingers to provide more force in
cutting thicker fabrics.

This is popular in zigzagging or scalloped

edge or for seam finishes. This is used to
Pinking Shears finish seams and raw edges and to create
decorative edges on many types of fabric.
It cuts a ravel-resistant edge. This is not
satisfactory for straight cutting.

This is used for cutting threads, paper,

Scissors trimming and slashing. It is smaller and
lighter than shears and the handles are the
same in size.

Thread clippers are a handy little

springloaded cutting tool that allows for the
Thread snipping of threads. These clippers are
Clippers specifically used to snip threads and they
are not designed to cut fabric.

Seam rippers are specifically designed for

Seam ripping out stitches from seams, either as
Ripper a result of an error or during alterations.
They should be used carefully to prevent
damage to the fabric.

It is an adaptation of the giant rotary cutter

used by the garment industry. It works like
Rotary Cutter a pizza cutter and can be used by left or
and Mat right-handed sewers. The rotary cutter is
available in different sizes with different
blades. When using a rotary cutter, work
on a cutting mat to protect the blade and
the cutting surface.

 Marking Tools Description

This is available in white or pastel shades.

Chalk Pencils / This chalk pencil is used to make fine lines
Dressmaker on fabric. It has an erasing brush at one
pencil end.

Has two types. The first one washes out

and the one that fades after 48 hours.
Liquid Marking Those that wash out and show water
Pen marks shouldn’t be used on fabric. The
mark should be removed before pressing
the fabric.

This is used in marking the fabric directly

Tailor’s Chalk and temporarily. Tailor’s chalk is available
in range of color.

A marking device with a sawtooth blade

Tracing Wheel and it is used to transfer markings from
pattern to fabric.

It is also called dressmaker ‘s tracing

Dressmaker’s paper is used with the aid of tracing to
Carbon Paper transfer marks from the pattern to the cloth
and it comes in different sizes and colors.

Sewing Aid Description

A pincushion holds the straight pins and

accidents. This is made of cotton,
sometimes human hair scraps of fabrics
and crushed candle or wax for easy gliding
the needle or pin in the fabric while sewing.

 Emery Bag A small bag filled with emery or fine sand
used to sharpened pins and needles.

Magnetic It is used to gather up stray pins easier

Pin Cushion

Used in making temporary stitches and

Hand Needle buttonholes. Sizes of 7 to 10 are for
general hand sewing.

It aids in putting the thread to the needle.

Sewing Needle It consists of two parts. The handle and the
Threader wire. The end of the wire that is away from
the holder is folded

on the finger that pushes the needle in
Thimble sewing.

Used in assembling or constructing the

parts of the garment. Threads vary in
Thread sizes. Heavy fabrics need stronger
threads. It should have the same color with
that of the fabric used.

Materials Description

It is the cloth used in making garments.

Fabric The plain cotton fabrics, flour sack or
catcha is the most appropriate material for
beginners because these are very easy to
handle.
