What is ASTM C67?
ASTM C67 is a standard test method for determining the amount of water absorption and bulk specific
gravity of dimension stone. This test method is commonly used in the stone industry to determine the quality
and durability of natural stone materials. It involves measuring the weight of a dry specimen, then fully
immersing it in water for a specified period of time before weighing it again to determine the amount of
water absorbed. The bulk specific gravity is then calculated based on the weight of the dry specimen and its
volume.

Scopes of ASTM C67:

The scope of ASTM C67 is to provide a standard test method for determining the amount of water absorption
and bulk specific gravity of dimension stone. It applies to natural stone materials used for construction,
paving, and decorative purposes. The test method is intended to provide a means of comparing different
types of dimension stone and assessing their suitability for various applications based on their water
absorption and bulk specific gravity properties. The standard also provides guidelines for sample
preparation, testing procedures, and data analysis.
ASTM C67 determine the classification of bricks according to their water observation, Knowing the
classification of bricks help us to choose the best samples of bricks.

Classification of bricks:
Each class of brick must have this percentage of water observation.
1. Class l (12-15%)
2. Class ll (15-20%)
3. Class lll (20-25%)
4. Class IV more than 25%

Apparatus:
 Three bricks
 Balance 0.1gr
 Oven
 Container of water

Procedure:
1. Sample preparation: The test specimens are prepared by cutting or sawing the dimension stone into
cubes or prisms of specified dimensions.
2. Oven-drying: The specimens are dried in an oven at a temperature of 230 ± 9°F (110 ± 5°C) until they
reach a constant weight.
3. Weighing: The dry weight of each specimen is determined to the nearest 0.1% of its weight.
4. Saturation: The specimens are immersed in water for a period of 48 hours, after which they are removed
and allowed to drain for 15 minutes.
5. Weighing after saturation: The saturated weight of each specimen is determined to the nearest 0.1% of
its weight.
6. Bulk specific gravity calculation: The bulk specific gravity of each specimen is calculated by dividing its
dry weight by its volume, which is determined by measuring its dimensions.
7. Water absorption calculation: The water absorption of each specimen is calculated as a percentage of its
dry weight using the formula [(saturated weight - dry weight) / dry weight] x 100.
8. Data analysis: The results are analyzed statistically to determine the mean values and standard
deviations of the bulk specific gravity and water absorption for each type of dimension stone tested.

Calculation:
SP1 SP2
SD weight 1912gr 1959gr
Dry weight 1635gr 1676gr

M2 – M1
W= 100%
M1

1912 - 1635
W1 = 100% = 16.94%
1635

1959 - 1676
W2 = 100% = 16.88%
1676

Result and Conclusion:

After this laboratory I found the water observation of 16.94% for SP1 and 16.88% for SP2 according to the
classification of bricks, they are in class II.
Second class of bricks have these requirements:
 Small cracks and distortions are permitted.
 The crushing strength >7.0 N/mm2.
 These bricks should have uniform texture.
Second class of bricks recommended for all important or unimportant hidden masonry works and centering
of reinforced brick and reinforced cement concrete (RCC) structures.

Benefits:
1. Quality control: The standard provides a consistent and reliable method for testing brick and structural
clay tile, ensuring that they meet certain performance requirements.
2. Safety: By testing these materials, the standard helps to ensure that they are safe for use in construction
projects.
3. Cost savings: By identifying any defects or issues with the materials early on, the standard can help to
prevent costly repairs or replacements down the line.
4. Compliance: Following the standard can help construction professionals to comply with relevant
regulations and codes.
5. Customer satisfaction: By ensuring that the materials used in construction projects meet certain
standards, customers can have confidence in the quality of the finished product.
