Thermal Bridges
Helia Najma
Introduction
Thermal bridges, often referred to as cold bridges, are areas within a
building’s envelope where heat flows more easily from the inside to
the outside. They are created when materials with high thermal
conductivity form a continuous path through the insulation, allowing
energy to escape. This usually happens when there are gaps or
weaknesses in the insulation layer, or where structural elements like
joists, beams, or window frames interrupt the thermal barrier.
Thermal bridges can significantly affect the energy efficiency of a
building, leading to higher heating costs and creating cold spots that
may cause condensation and mold growth. Identifying and properly
addressing thermal bridges during design and construction is essential
for ensuring good thermal performance and maintaining indoor
comfort.
Analyzing of Thermal Bridge
I maked it by 2 different ways, and I got also 2 different results.
First lets look at the AutoCAD version:
Thermal Conductivity of material:
Material Density Thermal Conductivity Specific Heat Capacity
(kg/m3) (W/mK) (J/kgK)
Concrete block (lightweight) 600 ~ 0.19 ~ 1000
Expanded polystyrene slab 25 ~ 0.035 ~ 1400
Brickwork (inner leaf) 1700 ~ 0.62 ~ 800
To procced with, we also should know the boundary conditions for
internal and external structure.
In the next step I proceed with the calculation of the thermal bridge
where I obtain isolines.

Conclusion
In this project, I looked at how thermal bridges affect the energy
efficiency of buildings. By analyzing different materials and running
calculations, I could see clearly how important it is to avoid gaps in
the insulation. I used two different methods to check the thermal
bridge behavior, and although the results were slightly different, both
showed how much heat can be lost through these weak spots.
This work helped me better understand the role of proper insulation
and careful design in keeping buildings warm and energy-efficient.
By paying attention to thermal bridges early in the design process, we
can reduce heat loss, save energy, and create more comfortable
spaces.
