1
SKETCHING FUNDAMENTALS

Details of all Sketch Tool are available here:

SKETCHING TOOL #1 – LINE

▪ To sketch lines or curves.

Press “A” or
move the mouse around the end point
to switch from line to “Arc”

By default, the line change to straight line again

Apply the ‘relation’ (indicated by symbol) whenever needed

2
SKETCHING TOOL #2 – FILLET & CHAMFER
▪ To trims away the corner at the intersection of two sketch entities to create a tangent arc or
chamfer.
(3) Select Entities:
Either the 2 intersected entities OR
The edge/vertex of these entities

(1) Click on Fillet or Chamfer

(2) Enter Radius

OR
distance

SKETCHING TOOL #2 – TRIM ENTITIES

▪ Two commonly used tools are the ‘Power Trim’ and ‘Corner’.

Power Trim: To trim

multiple, adjacent sketch
entities by dragging the
pointer across each
sketch entity.

Power Trim: Move the mouse over the entities that to be erased

Trim/Extend Corner: Click on the two intersected entities or the meeting point

Extends or trims two

sketch entities until they
intersect at a virtual
corner
6

3
SKETCHING TOOL #3 – CONVERT ENTITIES
▪ To create one or more curves in a sketch by projecting an edge, loop, face, curve, or external
sketch contour, set of edges, or set of sketch curves onto the sketch plane.

SKETCHING TOOL #4 – OFFSET ENTITIES

▪ To offset one or more sketch entities, selected model edges, or model faces by a specified
distance.

4
UNDER, FULL & OVER DEFINED SKETCH/MODEL
▪ The perfect sketch/model would be FULLY DEFINED with complete relations or constraints.

BLUE Entities = NOT

You need to ADD either
geometric or numeric
relations/ constraints

It is also indicated at the below

FULLY DEFINED SKETCH TOOL

▪ SolidWorks has a tool that can automatically fully design the sketch.
▪ However, this tool is NOT RECOMMENDED as it may generate nonsensical and useless results,
that maybe not aligned to your design intent and requirements.

MODIFY, SUPPRESS/UNSUPRESS SKETCH OR FEATURE
▪ You may re-edit or modify your existing sketch or feature anytime, and as many as you like.
(1) Select the Sketch or
Feature and Click RMB (2b) Select “Edit Sketch” to (2c) Select “Suppress”

IDENTIFYING BEST PROFILE & CHOOSING PLANE

▪ The identified best profile is typically selected as the “base feature” (first feature).
▪ “Best Profile” criteria:
1. The largest feature of the part model
2. The base for the part (base material/stock)
3. The origin/reference point of all dimensions
▪ Choosing Plane criteria:
1. Based on the chosen “Best Profile”, which plane is use (refer to the drawing as well)

▪ Select the “Best Profile” to start-up as your “Base Feature” from the parts below:

TIPS

23

23

TIP #1: RELATE TO THE ORIGIN IN SKETCHING

▪ It is recommended to relate some of the entities to the sketch origin, to assist in fully defining
the sketch.
▪ Refer to the technical drawing, to identify the potential origin location.
▪ Some of the potential origin locations are:
❑ Location where mostly dimensions are referring to.
❑ Centre point of the part model.

TIP #2: DRAG-WINDOW ENTITIES SELECTION
▪ When you move your mouse to select some of the entities with Drag-Window technique, it can
be either from top-left to bottom-right, or bottom-right to top-left. Both will give you difference
results.

TIP #3: CHANGING SKETCH PLANE

▪ Sometimes, by mistake you have created the sketch on the wrong plane or face, and then you
need to transfer your existing sketch into another plane.

(3) Select
Correct Plane/ the Correct
(2) Click Edit

related entities. Now, all relations are displayed

Note: Similar process is applicable for

other features or tools

TIP #7: ADDING FEATURE/TOOL ICON
We can ADD any feature or tool icon into our existing Command Menu with
several ways:

1. From Search Command

(1) Search the Feature or Tool we need from Search Command

(2) Now, DRAG and DROP the Feature or

Tool straight away from the SEARCH
command to the Command or Shortcut

7. Click and Drag it to the CommandManager menu
Now the Equations is permanently on the menu, until
you remove it.

TIP #8: ADDING REFERENCES - PLANE
▪ Sometimes you need to add references such as plane, coordinate system, point and axis to
assist you in part or assembly modeling.

Offset (2 x)

(1) Select Reference

Geometry from the
CommandMenu 1st Reference
(2) Select Plane Increase the
number to have

Geometry from the
CommandMenu (blue)

(2) Select
Coordinate System (3)
a) Select Vertex Point = CS
Origin Point
b) Select Any 2 of 3 Edges to
represent the 2 axes (need to
flip the direction if necessary)

34

34

17
TIP #10: INSTANT DIMENSIONS MODIFICATION
▪ Alternative to the modification of dimensions in the FEATURES (from the DesignTree). You can
modify the dimension directly from the 3D Model in the Graphic Area.
▪ To do this, you must ACTIVATE the Instant3D (in 3D Model) or Instant2D (in Sketch) .

(1) Click on chosen

Feature on the 3D Model (2) Double-Click on
or in the Design Tree chosen Dimension
(either on the Value or
the Blue Ball on the (3) MODIFY
Dimension)

Note: If you have difficulties to Double-Click on the Dimension value,

Double click on the Blue Ball

35

TIP #11: SELECTION FILTER

▪ Selection Filters help select specific types of items in the graphics area or drawing sheet. For
example, choose the filter for faces so only faces can be selected.

Press F5 to show/hide the Selection Filter menu. The menu is typically displayed at the bottom side of the GUI.

Alternatively, RMB and Now, choose

select “Selection Filters” which Filter to
