Tutorial -6
1. Determine the plastic section modulus about the strong and weak axes in the
following cases.
2. An I-section beam is fabricated with plates of following dimensions.
Flanges : 380 × 20 mm
Web : 1600 × 15 mm
Classify flanges, web and the section. Also determine the plastic moment
capacity of the beam about its strong axis, if the grade of steel is Fe 410.
3. Determine the design bending strength of ISLB 350 @ 486 N/m considering the
beam to be (a) laterally supported (b) laterally unsupported. The design shear
force V is less than the design shear strength. The unsupported length of the beam
is 3.0 m. Assume steel of grade Fe 410.
4. An ISLB 600 @ 976.1 N/m has been used as a simply supported beam over 7.20 m
span. Determine the safe uni form load that the beam can carry in flexure. Assume
Fe 410 steel. (a) The compression flange of beam is restrained against lateral
buckling. (b) The compression flange of beam is not restrained against lateral
buckling. At the ends beam is fully restrained in torsion but both the flanges are
free to warp at the ends.
