Problem/ There is an insufficient understanding on the Mathematics skills such as knowing and
Issue understanding, computing and solving, estimating, reasoning, visualizing and modeling,
representing and communicating, conjecturing, proving and decision-making, applying, and
connecting as per mentioned in the conceptual framework of Department of Education (DepEd)
(see Figure 1).
Goals The goal of the program is to impart a sufficient understanding on the Mathematics skills
mentioned.
Enhance the multiple cognitive strategies of the students by teaching Mathematical problem
structures, strategies to solve, enhance the problem- solving skills and present the solutions.
Persons The target of the program is the Grade 8 students, with the help of the subject teacher who will
Involved implement the program. Through the help of the administration to acknowledge the program and
the support of their parents.
Intervention ● Develop an Intervention Program in Mathematics to address the Mathematical Learning
Strategy Gaps.
● Provision of Mathematics-related instruction materials that will help the learning gaps of
the students using Four D Model.
● Introduce the 4 - step Polya’s Heuristic Principles Work (PHPW)
Step 1. Understanding the Problem
Step 2. Making a Plan
Step 3. Executing the Plan
Step 4. Feedback
● Implement the PHPW strategy for solving math word problems.
Skills Expanding the students’ Mathematical skills such as knowing and understanding, computing and
Targeted solving, estimating, reasoning, visualizing and modeling, representing and communicating,
conjecturing, proving and decision-making, applying, and connecting as per mentioned in the
conceptual framework of Department of Education (DepEd) (see Figure 1).
Activities 1. Orientation of the parents and the students about the program that will be implemented.
2. Scheduling of the session PHPW.
3. Identify the beneficiaries of the PHPW.
4. Preparation of the Mathematics-related instruction materials for the session.
5. Implement the PHPW with direct instruction includes structured lesson plans every
session, with the frequent teacher-student interaction, and feedback.
Resources MELCs in Mathematics
Timeline The session will be implemented for the second half of the first semester of academic term
(August – October). The PHPW will continue for 12 sessions.
