1. Consider a stator used to turn the flow angle.
Apply the Bernoulli equation and the integral
equations of mass conservation, linear momentum, angular momentum, and energy between
the sections 1 and 2. Given air density is 1.2 kg/m3, V1=10 m/s. Find V2, P1-P2, the force, and
the torque that needs to be applied on the stator for equilibrium. Apply angular momentum
equation at mean radius.
2. Sketch typical performance curves for a typical pump. Briefly explain the features.
b) Write down the general forms of continuity and angular momentum equations for a
fixed control volume. For the sprinkler shown in the figure, calculate the mass flow
rate and torque if the sprinkler is not allowed to rotate.
c) What is a reverse sprinkler? Sketch the flow patterns at the bent tube end for
normal and reverse sprinkler operation.
3. Consider an axial flow fan; a typical section of the blade is shown in the figure below. Sketch
the typical velocity triangles at the inlet and outlet. Write down the equation for torque
using the angular momentum equation. Obtain the relations for mass flow rate, power and
head developed in terms of the absolute velocities and blade rotation speed, assuming ideal
conditions.
4. Sketch the flow pattern for an axial flow fan that is operating in the free ambient. If the head
developed is H, density is ρ, and atmospheric pressure is Pa, derive the expressions for the
pressures and absolute velocities developed at the inlet and outlet sections of the fan.
Assume the flow at the inlet is axial.
