How Nestlé is Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Introduction The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were introduced by the United
Nations in 2015 to address major global issues such as poverty, inequality, and climate change.
These 17 goals aim to create a more sustainable and fair world by 2030. Large multinational
companies have an important role in helping to achieve these goals. One such company is
Nestlé, a global food and beverage business. This report will examine how Nestlé has
implemented the SDGs through its business strategies.

Nestlé as a Multinational Business Nestlé operates in over 180 countries and is one of the
largest food and beverage companies in the world. As a multinational company, it has a large
customer base, significant market influence, and a complex supply chain. This means that its
business decisions have a major impact on people and the environment. Nestlé has recognised
its corporate social responsibility (CSR) and has taken steps to ensure its business operations
align with sustainable development.

Implementation of SDGs by Nestlé Below are key examples of how Nestlé has contributed to
achieving the SDGs:

1. Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Nestlé aims to reduce waste and make its packaging more sustainable. The company
has set a target for all its packaging to be recyclable or reusable by 2025. It also works
on reducing food waste by improving supply chain efficiency and supporting food
donation programs.
2. Goal 13: Climate Action
Nestlé is committed to reducing its carbon footprint. It has set a goal to achieve net-zero
carbon emissions by 2050. The company invests in renewable energy, improves water
management, and promotes sustainable farming practices to reduce environmental
impact.
3. Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Nestlé ensures fair wages and safe working conditions for employees and suppliers. It
also supports small businesses and farmers by providing training and fair trade
opportunities, which helps boost local economies and create job opportunities.
4. Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being
Through its products and campaigns, Nestlé promotes nutrition and health. The
company has reformulated many of its food and beverage products to reduce sugar, salt,
and unhealthy fats while adding more essential nutrients. Nestlé also runs educational
programs on healthy eating and hydration.

Challenges and Solutions While Nestlé has made progress, it faces challenges such as
ensuring all suppliers follow sustainability standards and reducing plastic waste. To overcome
these, the company collaborates with governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs),
and customers to promote sustainable business practices. Investing in research and innovation
also helps Nestlé develop new solutions to these challenges.

Conclusion Nestlé’s actions demonstrate how a multinational business can contribute to

achieving the SDGs. By focusing on sustainable production, reducing its environmental impact,
supporting fair work policies, and improving global health, Nestlé sets a strong example for
corporate responsibility. If more businesses follow similar strategies, the world will be closer to
achieving sustainability by 2030.
