Introduction
A stepper motor is also known as step motor or stepping
motor,is the one in which the rotor turns in discrete
[Link] angular rotation is determined by the number of
pulses fed into the control circuit .After the rotor moves a
step, it stops turning until it receives the next pulse or
command.
Construction
The construction of a stepper motor is fairly related to a DC
stepper motor, like other motors, has a stationary part(stator) and
a rotating part(rotor). The stator has coils (electromagnets) that,
when energized in a sequence, create a magnetic field that
interacts with the rotor, causing it to rotate in discrete steps.
Principle of operation
The principle of operation of a stepper motor can be
explained by considering a series of electromagnets
arranged in a circle shown in the figure. When these
electromagnets are energized in a sequence, their fields
interact with the rotor and causes it to turn in either
direction clockwise or anti-clockwise depending upon the
switching sequence.
Types of stepper motor
The most popular types of stepper motor are as the
following :
Permanent Magnet (PM) stepper motor
Variable Reluctance (VR) stepper motor
Permanent Magnet stepper motor: A stepper
motor in which the rotor is made of permanent
magnet having even number of poles is called
permanent magnet stepper motor.
Variable Reluctance stepper motor: A stepper motor in which the
rotor is made of soft iron teeth (pole) on the outer periphery to
obtain variable reluctance is called Variable Reluctance stepper
motor.
