A. Conceptual Framework
Independent Variable Dependent Variable
Recycling the PET
plastic to create a Durability (weight,
plastic boot. material composition),
Water proof,
Recycling the PET plastic to create a plastic boot. Ensuring the boots are in good quality through: durability,
waterproofness, affordability, and accessibility . With the materials used, as an independent variable, reflects
the outcome of the boots capabilities. It will reflect the boots strength and weakness for anti leptospirosis.
Especially in Marikina which is known to be flooded a lot.
B. Materials needed
To be able to do the DIY boot, the goal is to set some materials needed to be prepared for the process
making. Being aware of what is needed is essential, especially making the boot from scratch and
waste.
- PET plastic bottles (20-30 bottles): To create the exterior waterproof barrier of the boot.
- EVA foam (50 x 100 cm): For structure and durability
- Memory foam insoles (9 USA / 39 euro): For feet insoles and comfortability
- Latex memory foam: for feet support
- Anti Slip soles (rubber): For the boots to not slip
- Heat gun: To shrink wrap the plastic
- Glue gun: To glue some other parts and being an extra
- Hot melt-adhesive ( 10-above pieces): Glue for the glue gun
- Super glue (Cyanoacrylate, 50G, 5 bottles): the glue use in the process
- Baking soda (227 g): A component that strengthens the super glue
- N95 respirator mask (10 pcs): for protection and safety from the chemicals
- Heat resistant gloves: for hot surfaces
- Surgical gloves (25 pairs): when adding the glue, gloves are use for protection
- Newspapers: to make the experiment less messy, can help with casting
- Tape : for shoe casting
- Cutter / scissors- to cut the materials.
- Rugby- adhesive
- Super glue- incase needed adhesives
- Clean used cotton fabric- for protective gear from the EVA foam
C. Locale
Making the boot means setting an area of workforce. The goal is set in a near and known place, especially
for the ones making the boots. It is essential to be able to be organized and for the needed boundaries and
environment.
- Science lab in School: If we were given a chance to experiment in school, the science lab is a great
option. Utilizing the lab is a proper place especially when we need to mix some mixtures.
- Classroom: If we were given a chance to experiment in school but the science lab is unavailable or
preoccupied, the classroom will do. Our experiment does not involve a lot of chemicals when we create
the boots.
- One of the member’s houses: When there will be no other options, going to one of the members'
houses is another option. Especially when using the heat gun. An adult supervisor is needed (in case of
a cenario). Well ventilation is also crucial when doing the shrinking process.
D. Procedures
1. Identify the problem
PET boots are made from recycled and basic materials
found in our community. It is not easy creating this type
of boots especially it is not commercialize. The
problem is how the materials can be formed to create a
flood proof, lightweight, durable, and price efficient
boots compared to rubber boots (since rubber boots is
created for the base of the recycled boots).
2. Gathering info and materials
To gather data, we will be comparing the PET boots from
rubber boots for better data collection. Some of our materials
are recycled/unused. The cotton fabric from unused
pillowcase and the PET bottles are recycled. Some materials
like the EVA foam, soles, insoles, heat gun and adhesives are
bought from online or physical shops.
3. Setting the experiment up

4. Data collection
Testing our PET plastic boots requires a huge amount of
attention based on its performance on what the product is used
for. Here are some points that are needed to take note of in the
experiment. Material Properties to see if the materials we use
makes the product better and more durable. Design and Comfort
to make sure the person who is wearing the boots are comfortable
5. Data Analysis
The analysis of the boot is tested with its qualities as a
flood proof boot. We would compare and assess its similarities
and differences with the generic rubber boots because it is the
standard boot. Identifying if the boot is highlights all the
specialities needed for a good boot. We would also like to
include the comfortability of the person wearing the boot.
6. Conclusion
To conclude our procedures, recycling of PET boots must be
experimented through the collection of data and analysis, crafting and
evaluating. PET plastic as boots are essential for once safety, so it
should be crafted to be able to stand the needed standards. These
standards are the ones who hold the boots in a proper way to be able to
be worn and used for emergencies. To reach such an experiment,
E. Data Collection
-Experiment: Boot making process, especially with the use of plastic, is a process that could take some time
and effort. Crafting a boot made out of plastic means doing it on hand and should be careful. There are some
instances that the materials used for the boot won’t work properly. That’s why experimenting with the materials
to create a boot is essential. Seeing the pros and cons while crafting the boot is important since PET plastic is
delicate from other chemicals and obviously heat. Our experiment would consist of the quality of the boots by
checking its durability and weight. Waterproofness is also essential as it checks the boots waterproof when
dipped into water. Lastly, the boots accessibility and affordability in our area. Looking into the loopholes and
missing parts is needed. At the same time, finding the experiments capabilities and power.
F. Data Analysis Method
- ANOVA: The data analysis that we would take from the PET boots is by comparing it with the generic
rubber boots used for floods. It is an important factor to check if our boots reach the needed standard to
create a flood proof boot. Checking both, the Pet boots and the rubber boots, variance and how we can
differentiate both their strengths and weaknesses. We would check if our boots are durable, waterproof,
and accessible or cost-efficient.
