INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of The Paper

The rapidly developing digital era brings various changes in various aspects of
life, including in the world of education. Mathematics learning is also not free from
the influence of this era. On the one hand, digital technology offers various
opportunities to improve the quality of mathematics learning. On the other hand,
this era also presents various challenges that must be faced by teachers and
students. Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 20 of 2003 concerning the
National Education System (Sisdiknas) regulates the objectives of national
education, namely to improve the life of the nation and develop the whole
Indonesian people, who believe in and are devoted to God Almighty, and have
noble character, have personality, knowledge, skills, intelligence, And morals
glorious, insightful nationality, state, and citizenship, and are able to live
independently and contribute to society. In achieving these goals, mathematics
learning plays an important role. Mathematics is one of the compulsory subjects
at all levels education, start from school base until school tall. Mathematics
is a basic science and important to be mastered by everyone. Mathematics can help
us to think logically, crtitically, and systematically. Mathematics can also help us to
solve various problems in everyday life.
Mathematics is a basic science that has been widely needed in various fields of
human life, so there needs to be an effort in learning mathematics so that
mathematics can be learned optimally, so that every student can understand
mathematics well during online learning. All students study mathematics from
elemntary school to higher education, including junior high school (JHS). The scope
of school learning, especially junior high school (JHS), includes several aspects,
including numbers, algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics and probability (Sari
et al., 2017). One of the materials in algebra is the material on System of Equations
Linear Two Variables. This System of Equations Linear Two Variables material is
very thick with the context of everyday life that is often used.
In life daily, implementation System of Equations Linear Two Variables can
finish various calculation problems, including money problems, age problems, and

1
business problems, such as shopping activities for example. Mathematically, System
of Equations Linear Two Variables can also be used to determine the coordinates of
the intersection of two straight lines, determine the solution set in an equation, and
determine the value of variables contained in equality. So that can concluded that
mastery of the material very important and must be truly understood. However, it
turns out that based on previous research, students have difficulty understanding the
material and have difficulty understanding the mathematical concepts contained in
the material on systems of linear equations in two variables (Paujiah & Zanthy,
2020).

DISCUSSION

2.1 Understanding of a System of Equations Linear Two Variables

A system of linear equations in two variables is two linear equations that have two
variables and one solution that satisfies both equations. A linear equation in two
variables has the following characteristics:

1. Has two variables.

2. The power of each variable is equal to one.
3. If depicted in graphical form, a straight line (linear) graph will be formed.

A system of linear equations in two variables is a type of mathematical material

that presents problems according to existing situations (contextual problems), namely
simple problems related to everyday life. Through story problems that raise everyday
problems, students are required to communicate everyday language into mathematical
language and interpret the results of calculations carried out according to the problem
given to obtain a solution (Achir, 2017).

2.2 Method for solving systems of linear equations in two variables

Steps to Solve a System of Linear Equations in Two Variables. General form

of a system of linear equations in two variables.

𝑨𝟏 𝒙 + 𝑩𝟏 𝒚 = 𝑪𝟏

𝑨𝟐 𝒙 + 𝑩𝟐 𝒚 = 𝑪𝟐

x and y are variables a1 ,a2 ,b1 ,b2 ,c1 ,c2 € R.

The way to solve a system of linear equations in two variables is by:

1. Elimination Method
Elimination Method An equation can be analogous to the equilibrium of two
panic scales. It is said to be balanced if both sides have the same value. This
equilibrium idea can help in solving linear equations in one variable. However,
the idea of equilibrium can also be applied in solving systems of linear
equations in two variables. In this case, one variable is removed from the two

3
equations. This method of solving systems of linear equations is known as the
elimination method.
2. Substitution Method
The Substitution Method means inserting or placing a variable into another
place. This means that the substitution method is a way to replace one variable
with another variable by changing the variable to be entered into an equation
where the variable has a coefficient of one.
3. Mixed Elimination and Substitution Methods
Mixed Elimination and Substitution Methods In solving systems of linear
equations in two variables using the substitution method and the elimination
method, they can also be combined into an elimination-substitution method or
a substitution-elimination method. This depends on which one is easier to do
in solving the system of linear equations in two variables at hand.
4. Graph Method
In this method, we plot the two equations in cartesian coordinates and find the
intersection point between the two lines.
Suppose there are two equations viz:
x + y = 10
2x – y = 4
The steps for solving using the graph method are:
1) Create a table of values for both equations, for example:
• Equation x + y = 10: for x = 0, y = 10; for x = 10, y = 0.
• Equation 2x – y = 4: for x = 0, y = -4; for x = 4, y = 4.
2) Draw both lines on the graph, then find the intersection point. The
intersection point is the solution of the system of linear equations of
two variables.
In this case, the result of the intersection point will be the same as the result
we get from the substitution and elimination methods.

2.3 Implementation in daily life

An understanding of systems of linear equations in two variables allows us to

solve various problems involving the relationship between two quantities that can be
represented by these variables. This paper will discuss the application of systems of

4
linear equations in two variables in everyday life, with relevant case examples and a
more in-depth explanation of the solution method and interpretation of results.

Case Example:

1. Solve problems in a system of linear equations in two variables to find the

difference in ages

Case examples: Twice Dea's age plus his father's age is now 66 years old,
while 3 years ago the difference between his father's age and 3 times Dea's age
was 7 years. How old are Dea and Dad now?

Answer:

Suppose

• Dea's age = x
• Father's age = y

The mathematical model is:

• 2x + y = 66... equation (1)

• (y - 3) - 3(x - 3) = 7 (subtracted 3 because 3 years ago)

y - 3 - 3x + 9 = 7

-3x + y + 6 = 7

-3x + y = 1 ... equation ( 2 )

Use the elimination method in equations (1) and (2)

2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 66
−3𝑥 + 𝑦 = 1

5𝑥 = 65
𝑥 = 13

5
Substitute x = 13 into equation (1)

2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 66
2(13) + 𝑦 = 66
26 + 𝑦 = 66
𝑦 = 66 − 26
𝑦 = 40

Obtained:

x = 13 years (Dea's age)

y = 40 years (father's age)

So, Dea is now 13 years old and his father is 40 years old.

2. Solve problems in a system of linear equations in two variables to

determining paint mixtures: Suppose you have two types of paints of
different colors and want to mix them to get a particular color. Suppose x liters
of color A paint and y liters of color B paint are mixed to get z liters of mixed
color paint. A system of linear equations of two variables can be used to
determine the values of x and y needed to get the desired mixed color.
3. Solve problems in a system of linear equations in two variables to
calculating distance and travel time in travel: A system of two-variable
linear equations can be used to model the relationship between speed,
distance, and travel time. Suppose x is the speed of the first vehicle and y is the
speed of the second vehicle. An equation like d=vt (distance = speed × time)
can be solved using a System of linear equations of two variables.
4. Solve problems in a system of linear equations in two variables to
organizing finances and budgets: In managing finances, let's say there are
two types of expenses (food and transportation) with a certain total monthly
budget. A two-variable linear equation system can help us calculate how much
money is budgeted for each expense category under certain assumptions.

CHAPTER III

CLOSING

3.1 Conclusion

Based on the case examples that have been reviewed, it can be concluded that
the system of linear equations of two variables has an important role in solving
various practical problems in everyday life. Its ability to model situations with two
unknown variables makes it a useful tool in areas such as determining age,
determining paint mix, and calculating distance and travel time.

The system of linear equations of two variables is a mathematical concept that

has many practical applications in everyday life. By understanding the system of
linear equations of two variables, we can make more informed and efficient decisions
in various situations. The system of linear equations of two variables is not just about
numbers and formulas, but also about opening the gates of creativity and effectiveness
in solving various problems.

3.2 Suggestion

In preparing this paper, the author realizes that there are still shortcomings in
the discussion, both in the substance of the material and in the examples of each
material discussed.

Many people should realize that the system of linear equations of two
variables we find in everyday life. And the author hopes that we can better understand
and apply this system of linear equations of two variables in life.
