Carbonates Notes:
What is the chemical name of lime? Calcium Oxide
What is the chemical name of limestone? Calcium Carbonate
What is the chemical name for slaked lime? Calcium Hydroxide
How do we obtain calcium oxide from calcium carbonate?
A- The calcium carbonate undergoes thermal decomposition by
heating to obtain calcium oxide.
CaCO3 CaO + CO2
How do we obtain slaked lime?
A- By adding water to calcium oxide.
What are some uses of lime?
Treating water
Neutralising acidic waste products
Making ceramics
Treating acidic soil

What is the use of calcium carbonate in making Iron?
A- Calcium carbonate helps remove impurities from the iron. It
removes the silicon dioxide to form molten slag which is
separated from the iron.
What is flue gas desulfurization?
A- Flue gas desulfurization is when the sulphur dioxide emitted
from the burning fuels containing sulphur react with the
calcium oxide. This removes it from the flue gas.
Waste gases are passed into a scrubber. They react with calcium
oxide and calcium carbonate. The calcium compounds react with the
sulphur dioxide to form calcium sulphite.
What is formed when a carbonate reacts with an acid?
A- When a carbonate reacts with an acid, it forms water and
carbon dioxide as well.
