Indian Concept of Education

"Education is a treasure that can never be robbed. It is a pleasure that can never be possessed.
Education is the greatest wealth one can attain in this world and it is a necessity in today's
world. It is a wealth that gives satisfaction and saves us from destruction"

Education is a life-long process. It is a continuous process. It is a process of individual

development. It is both theoretical and practical. It is science as well as art. It is an instrument
that is used to attain a better life. Education is essentially a process of growth and development
which goes on throughout life. Education is the modification of behavior. Education is a tri-polar
process where a teacher, taught and social environment act and react with one another.

Etymological Meaning of Education

Etymologically, the word “Education” is said to be derived from the three Latin words.

(i) `Educare’ means ‘to bring up’, ‘to nourish’ and to ‘raise’.

(ii) `Educere’ implies ‘to draw out’, ‘to lead out’.

(iii) `Educatum’ means "the act of teaching or training"

Education means nourish the good qualities in individual and draw out the best in every
individual. Education seeks to develop the innate inner capacities of individual.

‘Education is the one and the only instrument that can be used to bring about a change towards
the social and economic betterment of India’.

So, education must be used as a powerful instrument of social, economic and cultural
transformation necessary for the realization of the national goals. Inculcating ‘Social
Responsibilities’ and ‘National Integration Values’ are a few of the national goals. The teachers
with good leadership traits are required in this regard.

Narrower Meaning of Education

In the narrow sense, education is confined to school and university instruction. Education starts
when the child enters the institution and ends when he leaves after completing a particular course
of study. Under this scheme, education of the child is over when, having received the given
amount of knowledge, he leaves the institution and takes up some occupation in life. The success
of the education of the child is evaluated in terms of passing the examination. That person who is
not involved in this type of education they are labeled as illiterate persons.

In its narrow sense, Education means Schooling. Here, everything is systematic, prefix and
predetermined. The curriculum, methods of teaching, examination and teacher are prefix and
predetermined. It is a systematic process to achieve the definite goals of education through
classroom instruction.

In short, education in its narrow meaning is equivalent to schooling, instruction or act of training.
 Broader Meaning of Education

In a broad sense, this type of education is not confined to any institution. It is a life-long process.
It starts with the mother's womb and ends in the tomb. In every phase of life, the individual
learns the education or gains the knowledge directly or indirectly. In its broader meaning,
education is a life-long process. In this connection, J.S. Mackenzie says: In the wider sense, “it is
a process that goes on throughout life, and is promoted by every experience in life.” According
to Prof. Dnmvile, “Education is includes all the influences which act upon an individual during
his passage from the cradle to the grave.” Thus, education in its broader meaning is the
cumulative effect of various experiences received by an individual in his home, out-of-home life,
in the school, out of school, here, there or everywhere. In the words of Lodge, “All experiences
are said to be education; the bite of mosquito, the taste of a watermelon, the experiences of
falling in love, of flying in an aeroplane, of being caught in a storm, in a small boat experiences.
Whatever broadens our horizon, deepens our insight, refines our reactions, and stimulate thought
and feeling educates us.”

Education seeks to nourish the good qualities in man and draw out the best in every individual.
Education seeks to develop the innate inner capacities of man. By educating an individual we
attempt to give him some desirable knowledge, understanding, skills, interests, attitudes and critical
thinking. That is, he acquires knowledge of history, geography, arithmetic, languages and sciences.
As an individual in the society, he has to think critically about various issues in life and take
decisions about them being free from bias and prejudices, superstitions and blind beliefs. Thus, he has to learn
all these qualities of head, hand and heart through the process of education.

So the function of education, thus, is to bring up or to develop children. The most popular
meaning of the term education identifies with the process of instruction and training that takes
place in an educational institution. Besides gaining knowledge and information, education also
develops and promotes national values, leadership and responsibilities. Education also helps an
individual to develop adjustment to the environment and have control over it. It develops social
responsibilities in learning.

Education is as vast as life itself. There is no aspect or dimension of life which is not covered
under education. In fact, all education is life and all life is education. Education is a lifelong
process. Education is formal, non-formal and informal; likewise, agencies of education are
formal, non-formal and informal. One learns from every source always. Education is concerned
with the aesthetic, cultural, ethical, intellectual, physical, religious, social, spiritual and
vocational development of an individual. Education has moved away from preparing pupils to fit
into a particular society but it seeks to make them feel that they belong to the larger world
family.
