1. Answer main idea questions correctly.


2. Recognize the organization of ideas:
1. Identify the Main Idea and Supporting Details
 The first sentence of a paragraph often introduces the main idea.
 Supporting sentences provide examples, reasons, or evidence.
 Look for transition words (for example, however, therefore) to see relationships between ideas.

2. Recognize Common Organizational Patterns


Pattern Signal Words
Cause and Effect because, due to, therefore, as a result
Compare and Contrast however, whereas, on the other hand, similarly
Problem and Solution issue, solve, approach, solution
Chronological (Time Order) first, then, next, finally
Classification/Listing types, kinds, categories
Argument and Refutation Introduces an idea or claim.
(An idea is presented and then refuted) Refutes it with reasoning or evidence.
Concept & Examples General idea presented first. Examples for clarification

3. TOEFL Organization Questions


You might see questions like:
✅ What is the main purpose of the paragraph?
✅ How does the author organize the passage?
✅ Why does the author mention X in paragraph ?
