Stability Calculation Guide for Vessels

This document provides a step-by-step guide for calculating the stability of a vessel, including both transverse and longitudinal stability calculations. It outlines the necessary formulas and steps to determine key values such as VCG, FSC, and trim, as well as how to use hydrostatic tables and GZ curves. The guide emphasizes the importance of checking vessel trim and adjusting drafts accordingly.

Simple Guide for Stability Calculation

Step 1 :

REMARK WEIGHT VCG V-MOMENT LCG L-MOMENT FSM

FINAL DISPLACEMENT TOTAL V-MOMENT TOTAL L-MOMENT TOTAL FSM

TRANSVERSE STABILITY CALCULATION

Step 2
VCG = Total V-Moment
Final Displacement

Step 3
FSC = Total FSM
Final Displacement

Step 4: Look in Hydro Static Table using Final Displacement:

Final Draft=
KM=

Step 5
VCG(Kgsolid) =
FSC = + ________
KG fluid =

Step 6
KM =
KG Fluid = - ________
GM Fluid =

Step 7: GZ table ( use Final Displacement)

Deg
KN ( use Final Displacement)
KG fluid x sin deg ( use KG fluid multiply the angle of inclination(theta or degrees)
GZ ( KN - (KG sin theta(degrees))

Step 8 : Draw the GZ curve

Step 9 : Simpsons Rule

0 - 30
1x GZ value of 0 =
3x GZ value of 10 =
3x GZ value of 20 =
1x GZ value of 30 = ___________
Total Sum

(3/8) x (10/57.3) x ( Total Sum ) =

0 - 40
1x GZ value of 0 =
4x GZ value of 10 =
2x GZ value of 20 =
4x GZ value of 30 =
1x GZ value of 40 = ___________
Total Sum

(1/3) x (10/57.3) x ( Total Sum ) =

LONGITUDINAL STABILITY CALCULATION

Step 1: Look for this Value in Hydrostatic Table using the Final Displacement
LCB
LCF
MTCT
TPC
LBP

Step 2
LCG = Total L-Moment -if LCG is lesser than LCB (Vessel Trim by the stern)
Final Displacement -if LCG is greater than LCB (Vessel Trim by the head)

Step 3
Trim = Final Displacement ( Diff. LCG & LCB) NOTE:
MTCT x 100 LCB = from Midship to LCB
LCG = from Midship to LCG
LCB = (LBP/2) - LCB
LCG = (LBP/2) - LCG

Step 4 : Change of Draft Forward

NOTE:
Cd Fwd = Trim x ( (LBP/2) + LCF) LCF = from Midship to LCF
LBP LCF = (LBP/2) - LCF

Cd Aft = Trim - Cd Fwd

Step 5 Final Draft

Forward Aft Always Remember: Go back to
Mean Draft Final Draft Final Draft step 2. If the vessel is trim by the
Change of Draft Cd Fwd Cd Aft stern (Forward draft should be
Final Draft Fwd Draft Aft Draft lesser than Aft Draft)
