LOCATION BASED E-BLOOD BANK SYSTEM

ABSTRACT

The population of the world is multiplying with each coming year and so are
the diseases and health issues. With an increase in the population there is an increase in the
need of blood. The growing population of the world results in a lot of potential blood donors.
But in spite of this not more than 10% of the total world population participates in blood
donation. With the growing population and the advancement in medical science the demand
for blood has also increased. Due to the lack of communication between the blood donors and
the blood recipients, most of the patients in need of blood do not get blood on time and hence
lose their lives. There is a dire need of synchronization between the blood donors and
hospitals and the blood banks. This improper management of blood leads to wastage of the
available blood inventory. Improper communication and synchronization between the blood
banks and hospitals leads to wastage of the blood available. These problems can be dealt with
by automating the existing manual blood bank management system. A high-end, efficient,
highly available and scalable system has to be developed to bridge the gap between the
donors and the recipients and to reduce the efforts required to search for blood donors. To
build a solution to the ever growing requirement of blood due to accidents and various health
problems the system is developed for accessing the information about various blood banks
and hospitals and their blood stock providing information of donor. The aim of this socially
relevant project is to manage the donation and storing of blood in Blood Banks. Users can
register as a Donor. His details will be stored in the backend database. User can also request
for specific blood group. There will be extra functionality like 'Donors Comments', 'Blood
Donation Tips' page etc. Features include product oriented data input, inventory control
reports, product utilization reports, rapid retrieval of individual patient reports. Relative
benefits of the system are discussed. The management system should solve the issue of
demand and wastage; and lead to self sufficiency in blood requirement. The solution should
give complete information about blood donors, and various activities of hospitals and blood
banks regarding the blood donation. Donors are provided with registration process to
maintain their information for future donations as well as to make their information available
to search. Blood recipients can place order for blood. This system is totally targeted for
immediate information The purpose of this study was to develop a blood management
information system to assist in the management of blood donor records and ease/or control
the distribution of blood in various parts of the country basing on the hospital demands.
Without quick and timely access to donor records, creating market strategies for blood
donation, lobbying and sensitization of blood donors becomes very difficult. The blood
management information system offers functionalities to quick access to donor records
collected from various parts of the country. It enables monitoring of the results and
performance of the blood donation activity such that relevant and measurable objectives of
the organization can be checked. It provides to management timely, confidential and secure
medical reports that facilitates planning and decision making and hence improved medical
service delivery. The reports generated by the system give answers to most of the challenges
management faces as far as blood donor records are concerned.

Existing System
Firstly, a detailed study of the existing system was performed. Today, in the web we have
numerous community websites available through which people can communicate across
worldwide. But there are several shortcomings in the existing system.
 The users of these sites aren’t given much of a security. Any one can log on to the
network and view all details about a particular person. In other words privacy is
very less.
 The available sites aren’t much user friendly. For a naive user, it isn’t easy to get
acquainted with all the services provided in these sites.
 The searching process is quite tedious too.

During the analysis phase, I collected a lot of information about the existing system from the
web, communicated with users of the community sites, identified the shortcomings of the
existing system as well as noted down their innovative suggestions and comments. Keeping
in mind the above shortcomings I decided to develop web application “Blood Bank Portal”,
which is very user-friendly and helps to retrieve a lot of information within seconds at the
user’s fingertips

Disadvantages of Existing System

Module Description

• ADMINISTRATOR MODULE
• DONOR MANAGEMENT MODULE
• HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT MODULE
• BLOOD BANK MANAGEMENT MODULE

ADMINISTRATOR MODULE
 To be able to create, update, delete, and query donor’s records in order to manage
donor information.
 To be able to create, update, delete, and retrieve donation records to manage
information about donations made.
 To be able to deposit donated blood into inventory when donations are made
 To be able to withdraw blood from the inventory and keep a record of blood stocks to
always keep count of the blood bags.
 To be able to create, update, delete, and retrieve request records from hospitals to
manage hospital requests for blood.
 To be able to create, update, delete, and query hospital’s records in order to manage
hospital information.
 To be able to send e-mails to donors for their user account and blood results through
the system.
 To be able to send e-mail responding to hospitals for their blood requests through the
system.
 The system is able to generate a report to summarize all records including blood
donation, blood requests and blood stock for the administrator.

 DONOR MANAGEMENT MODULE

When a new donor comes to donate blood, they are required to fill out their personal
information during the registration process before making a donation. After the donation, the
donor is given a donor identification card with their name, blood type and a identification
number to be used as a reference for future donations. The identification number is used to
retrieve the donor’s record containing their personal information, medical history and
donation information, including blood results. Only blood bank administrators have the
authority to access the donor’s records, since the system is only available for their use within
the organization. This makes it difficult for donors to make changes to their personal
information within the system. That is, for donors to update their personal information, such
as their phone number, mailing address, or e-mail, they cannot update the information by
themselves, but have to contact the blood bank center to update their information. At the back
the card is a table that contains number of donations, date, location, and the blood collector’s
signature. Existing donors can submit their donor ID to retrieve their personal information
and donation records and start the blood donation process, and they will be given a new card
after they have donated blood for a total of eight times. Having a donor ID may be a tangible
reminder to people that they are helping lives as a blood donor; however, possessing a
physical card comes with drawbacks such as loss or damage. To ensure donors can still
identify themselves with the system, other credentials, such as username and password, can
be used as a safeguard if their donor ID is lost or damaged. If the donated blood is
disqualified, the donor will be notified through postal mail that their blood component is
reactive to viruses, meaning that there is a positive result of the blood being infected, and the
organization will also inform the donor to perform another blood test at the blood bank to
confirm the result of blood. If the blood is qualified, the administrator then will deposit the
blood into the inventory for future requests.

 HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT MODULE

This module consists of the process of how recipients are going to request for the required
amount of blood from the blood bank. The recipient has to make use of unique hospital id
which is registered in the hospital’s database .Only those requests made through a valid
hospital id will be considered as valid requests. While requesting for the required amount of
blood , the recipient can check the availability of blood of all blood groups in all the
registered blood banks available in the system so that request is not sent to a blood bank
which is deficient of the required blood . This module consists of the process of how the
requests from recipients for the required blood are served. The Blood Bank first checks
whether the request is a valid one. After validation it checks the hospital’s database to ensure
that the required amount of blood is not available in that hospital and after the request is
served. The blood bank module also consists of requesting the blood when urgently needed
from other banks and from the registered donors who have kept their status as available for
further contact.

 BLOOD BANK MANAGEMENT MODULE

The system uses a First-In-First-Out stock management, where the blood stock that is
checked-in to the system first will be the first one given to the hospital when requested. When
the blood stock is expired, the administrator is responsible for removing the stock from the
inventory and updating the system. The hospital can request blood via e-mail and by calling
to the blood bank. Notify by mail , the donor’s account and generated password will be sent
via e-mail, following by their blood result of the previous donation sent in a separated e-mail.
Hospitals can also receive e-mail responding to their requested blood whether it is available
in our stock or not.
