Comparison of Decimals
In order to compare decimal numbers follow these
steps
Step 1 Convert the given decimal numbers into like
decimals
Step 2 Compare the whole number part
The digit with the greatest whole number is the
greatest number
Step 3 If the whole number part is same or equal
compare the decimal part starting from tenth place if
the tenth place is same compare the hundredths place
and so on
Example:
7.4 and 2.86 the whole number part in 7.4 is 7
And 2.86 is 2 Since 7 >2 so 7.4 >2.86
Similarly 15.8 >9.93
Compare 0.83 and 0.9
0.83 has eight tenths and 3 hundredths and 0.9 has 9
tenths since eight tenths is less than 9 tenths
Therefore 0.83 <0.9 similarly 6.5 <6.72
Equivalent Decimals
Decimal Numbers which have the same values are
called equivalent decimals
For example:
1.25 and 1.250 are equivalent decimals
300 30 3 3
1000 100 10 After simplification we get 10
300 30 3
=0.300 =0.30 =0.3
1000 100 10
0.300 = 0.30 = 0.3 - equivalent fraction
Similarly
0.500 = 0.50 =0.5 - equivalent fraction
Note: by adding any number of zeroes after the
extreme right digit in the decimal number does not
change its value.
Decimal Places in a Decimal
Like and Unlike Decimal
All decimal can be grouped into two types
When decimal numbers have the same number of
decimal places they are called like decimal
Following are example of like decimals
When decimal numbers have the different number of
decimal places they are called unlike decimal
Following are example of unlike decimals
Conversion of unlike decimal into like decimal

Greatest decimal number
1 a)8.30 b)1.34 c)0.85 d)13.68 e)0.831
2. Write two more decimal numbers equivalent to
each of the given numbers
Equivalent decimals are decimal numbers that have
the same value.
For example, 0.5 and 0.50 are
equivalent decimals. You can see in
the models below that five tenths and
fifty hundredths take up the
same amount of space.
When you place zeros to the right of a decimal, its
value stays the same. These zeros are called trailing
zeros, and they do not change the value of the
number. 0.8=0.80=0.800 It doesn't matter how many
zeros are added after decimal point. Value remains the
same. However
Zeros placed before the end of the decimal do change
the value of the number. For example, 0.3 and 0.03
are not equivalent. Three tenths do not take up the
same amount of space as three hundredths.
(a) 0.5 | 0.50
(b) 1.3
(c) 19.8
Multiplication of Decimals
Multiplication of decimals by 10, 100, 1000
to multiply decimal by 10, 100 and 1000 we shift the
decimal point of the multiplication one two or three
places respectively to the right to the get the product.
Multiplication of decimals by whole number
taking the decimal point value into fraction
then arranging the table with the multiplier
and then applying the above rule
to multiply a decimal by a whole number we multiply
like whole numbers ignoring the decimal point.
We put the decimal point in the product leaving from
the right as many decimal places as there are in the
multiplicand

What is a Place Value Chart?
A place value chart is a table that is used to find the
value of each digit in a number based on its position,
as per the numeral system. In order to identify the
worth of different digits in a number accurately, we
place the given number in the place value chart so that
the place value of each digit is seen. To make the
process easier, the larger numbers are divided into
periods that are separated with the help of commas.
There are two types of place value charts that are
most commonly used, the Indian place value chart
and the International place value chart.
