Research Design for 7E Model Study
Research Design for 7E Model Study
The research instrument, a multiple-choice and word problem questionnaire, was pilot tested with a comparable group at Amai Pakpak Central Elementary School to ensure its validity and reliability. The instrument achieved a reliability coefficient of 0.803, above the accepted minimum of 0.700. These steps are crucial to ensure that the tool measures what it is intended to measure consistently and without bias, thereby enhancing the credibility and generalizability of the study results .
During the intervention phase using the 7E model, educational content focused on mathematics subjects such as converting fractions to decimals and vice versa, and operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals. This structured approach allowed for a targeted teaching method intended to enhance understanding and skills in these core areas of mathematics .
Mindanao State University was established under Republic Act 1387 and has become a multi-campus system. This growth, alongside the initiative to serve the educational community, led to the establishment of the Integrated Laboratory School in 1964. The school's dual role as a laboratory for educational training and a service provider to university families reflects MSU's strategic commitment to education, aligning with its historical mission to advance higher education and community service in the region .
The study used frequency and percentage to describe demographic variables, mean and standard deviation to measure variability, and a t-test for paired samples to determine if there were significant differences between pre-test and post-test scores. These methods provide a comprehensive analysis of both descriptive and inferential statistics, allowing for the assessment of changes in achievement scores and the reliability of those changes in evaluating the effectiveness of the 7E teaching model on student performance .
The ILS serves as both a laboratory school for training future educators within the College of Education and as a service provider for the children and dependents of MSU faculty and other personnel. These roles enable the school to fulfill educational training needs directly linked to the university’s mission of providing quality education and practical training environments for teacher education students, supporting the broader educational objectives of Mindanao State University .
Thematic analysis allows researchers to identify, analyze, and report patterns or themes within qualitative data. In this study, thematic analysis was employed to extract insights from interviews conducted with selected students post-intervention. This method helps uncover nuanced understandings of students' experiences and perceptions of the 7E model, providing depth to the quantitative findings and adding richness to the analysis by exploring areas such as student engagement, challenges, and instructional effectiveness .
The quasi-experimental design allows for the comparison of student performance using the pre-test and post-test in both experimental and control groups, thus assessing the impact of the 7E model on students' conceptual understanding. By comparing mean achievement scores before and after the intervention, the design can specifically attribute any observed changes in understanding to the 7E model, while minimizing confounding variables through controlled conditions .
The T-test for paired samples determines if there is a statistically significant difference between the means of pre-test and post-test scores of the same participants. By comparing these scores within the same group, this test controls for individual variability, isolating the effect of the 7E model intervention itself. This focus allows for a clear indication of whether the instructional approach, rather than extraneous factors, contributed to any observed changes in student performance, thus providing critical insights into the intervention's effectiveness .
Research ethics considerations such as informed consent, confidentiality, minimal risk to participants, and institutional approval all contribute to the study's integrity and validity. Informed consent ensures participants are adequately briefed about the study aims and their voluntary involvement, while confidentiality safeguards personal data, reinforcing trust. Minimization of risk aligns the study with ethical standards, enhancing its acceptability, and institutional approval provides oversight that aligns the study with university and ethical guidelines, ensuring methodological rigor and ethical compliance .
The 7E model, which includes components like Elicit, Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate, and Extend, promotes active learning and student engagement. By fostering inquiry and structured learning experiences, the model supports deep understanding and retention of mathematical concepts. The sequential stages guide students through a logical progression that builds on prior knowledge and encourages critical thinking, which is key to enhancing students' cognitive development in the intervention phase .
