project report is as much a part of the project as doing the experimental
work. However excellent and original a piece of work the project may
be, unless the results can be communicated to other people it may as
well not have been done. This report contains the following information:
Rigid pavements construction.
GSB, DLC, earthwork, PQC and other layers information. Seeing
the current increase in the traffic condition and water logging problems
during the rainy seasons at Mattighatt, Udayshiva
kumar Infra Limited has bagged of the contract for Road construction.

EXPLANATION
PURPOSE :
• Prevents flooding by channeling water (streams, storm water, or runoff) under infrastructure.
• Maintains natural water flow and prevents erosion.
MATERIALS USED:
• Concrete: Durable and strong, commonly used for large culverts.
• Corrugated Metal (Steel/Aluminum): Flexible and lightweight, good for
temporary installations.
Plastic: (HDPE/PVC): Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and easy to install.
INSTALLATION:
• Buried underground beneath roads or embankments.
• Proper slope ensures smooth water flow without clogging.
Why Are Culverts Important
• Prevents road washouts and flooding.
• Protects ecosystems by maintaining natural waterways.
• Ensures safe and stable transportation infrastructure.
TYPES OF CULVERTS
1. PIPE CULVERT
2. BOX CULVERT
3. ARCH CULVERT
DRR (GOVT) POLYTECHNIC, DAVANAGERE Page 21
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
PIPE CULVERT
A pipe culvert is a structure made of pipes (typically circular) installed beneath roads,
railways, or embankments to allow the flow of water, drainage, or small streams. It is a type of
culvert designed to prevent flooding, control erosion, and maintain proper water passage
under infrastructure.
BOX CULVERT
A box culvert is a reinforced concrete (RCC) or precast concrete structure with a rectangular
or square cross-section, used to allow the passage of water, vehicles, or pedestrians under roads,
railways, or embankments. It consists of one or multiple box-shaped channels
DRR (GOVT) POLYTECHNIC, DAVANAGERE Page 22
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
ARCH CULVERT
An arch culvert is a type of culvert that has a curved (arch-shaped) top, providing
structural strength and efficient water flow. It is typically constructed from materials such as
concrete, stone, brick, or corrugated metal. The arch design distributes load effectively.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PIPE CULVERT & BOX CULVERT
PIPE CULVERT
• Shape: Cylindrical (pipe-like).
• Material: Typically made of concrete, steel, or plastic
• Size: Usually smaller in diameter compared to box culverts.
• Function: Primarily used to allow water to flow under roads, railways, or embankments.
It is best suited for areas where the flow of water is small to moderate.
• Installation: Easier and quicker to install, often used in situations where space is limited
or the water flow is not large.
BOX CULVERT
• Shape: Rectangular or square.
• Material: Typically made of reinforced concrete.
• Size: Larger in size and capacity compared to pipe culverts, with more flexibility in
handling varying water flow rates.
• Function: Used for larger drainage needs, such as when a higher flow capacity or more
structural
• Installation: requires more complex construction and may be more expensive.

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
PCC BED CONCRETE LAYING
Leveling and Stability:
PCC provides a level and stable base for the structure. It ensures that the load is evenly
distributed and prevents uneven settling, which could lead to structural issues.
Load Distribution:
PCC helps in distributing the load of the structure over a larger area. This reduces the stress on
the soil and prevents excessive settlement or differential settlement.
RAFT WORK IN CULVERT
DRR (GOVT) POLYTECHNIC, DAVANAGERE Page 28
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
LOAD DISTRIBUTION:
The primary purpose of a raft foundation is to distribute the load of the building evenly over a
large area to prevent differential settlement. The steel reinforcement within the raft helps to
manage the stresses and strains caused by the loads.
STRUCTURAL REQUIREMENTS:
The design must meet the specific structural requirements of the building, including
HAUNCH WORK IN CULVERT
DRR (GOVT) POLYTECHNIC, DAVANAGERE Page 29
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
Haunches are provided in box culverts primarily to reduce stress concentrations and improve
structural resistance, especially at the corners where stresses are high, and to help prevent
excessive deformations and potential failure.
The haunch, a slight thickening or bend at the corners, helps distribute these stresses more
evenly, preventing them from accumulating and potentially causing failure.
SIDE WALL CONSTRUCTION IN CULVERT
Formwork Construction:
Build formwork to shape the side walls. The formwork should be sturdy and properly aligned to
ensure the walls are straight and of the correct dimensions.
DRR (GOVT) POLYTECHNIC, DAVANAGERE Page 30
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
Reinforcement Placement:
Install steel reinforcement bars (rebar) within the formwork according to the design
specifications. The rebar provides additional strength and helps prevent cracking.
SLAB WORK IN CULVERT
Reinforcement Placement
• Cut and bend steel reinforcement as per design specifications
.• Place reinforcement bars according to the culvert design (one-way or two-way slab).
• Maintain adequate cover using concrete spacers.
DRR (GOVT) POLYTECHNIC, DAVANAGERE Page 31
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
Concrete Pouring
• Use high-quality concrete mix as per structural requirements (typically M30 or higher).
• Pour concrete evenly to avoid segregation.
• Vibrate concrete properly to remove air voids and ensure compaction.
• Maintain proper thickness and leveling.
CULVERT CURING
DRR (GOVT) POLYTECHNIC, DAVANAGERE Page 32

EXCAVATION FOR RETAING WALL AND PCC LAYING AND WALL
CONSRTUCTION
Provides a Stable Foundation
• Excavation removes loose or unstable soil, allowing the retaining wall to be built on a
compacted, solid base, Prevents settling or hifting over time.
Ensures Proper Drainage Proper excavation allows for the installation of drainage
systems (like gravel backfill or weep holes) behind the wall.
• Reduces hydrostatic pressure, preventing wall failure due to water buildup.
DRR (GOVT) POLYTECHNIC, DAVANAGERE Page 33
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
Using concrete to fill the space behind a retaining wall offers several benefits, including
enhanced strength, durability, and erosion control, making it a robust and long-lasting solution
for retaining soil and preventing landslides.
CULVERT BACK FILLING
Structural Support:
Backfilling provides support to the culvert structure, helping to distribute loads evenly and
prevent deformation or collapse. The material used for backfilling helps to stabilize the culvert
and maintain its shape under the weight of the surrounding soil and any surface loads (e.g.,
vehicles, equipment).
DRR (GOVT) POLYTECHNIC, DAVANAGERE Page 34
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
Load Distribution:
Proper backfilling ensures that the loads from the surface (such as traffic or other external
forces) are transferred evenly to the culvert and the surrounding soil. This prevents stress
concentrations that could damage the culvert.

BITUMEN SCRIFYING WORK
Bitumen scarifying is done on roads to improve adhesion between the old and new
asphalt layers. The process involves roughening or removing the top layer of an
existing bituminous surface before laying a fresh layer.
Bitumen scarifying work involves removing the existing bituminous surface layer
(asphalt) from a road or pavement using specialized machinery, often followed by
earthmoving and potentially recycling the removed material

PROFILE CORRECTION WORK
Profile correction on a road is done to ensure a smooth, safe, and durable driving
surface. It involves adjusting the vertical alignment of the road to correct uneven
surfaces, bumps, depressions, or excessive slopes. Here are the main reasons for
profile correction:
profile correction work, also known as profile corrective course (PCC), focuses on
improving a road's vertical alignment, typically when overlaying an existing road to
enhance its condition and/or capacity.

Preferably the lean concrete shall be placed and compacted across the full width of road.
The compaction shall be carried out immediately after the material is laid and levelled. Double
drum smooth wheeled vibratory rollers of minimum 80 to 100KN static weight are considered
To be suitable for rolling dry lean concrete. The minimum dry density obtained
shall be 98%. The Surface of concrete slab shall be brush-texture. The brushed surface texture
shall be applied evenly across the slab in one direction by the use of wire brush not less than
450mmwide. Curing shall be done by covering the surface by gunny bags which shall kept
continuously moist for 7 days by sprinkling water.

SLUMP CONE TEST
Slump test is the most commonly used test of measuring workability of concrete. It can be
employed either in laboratory or at site of work. It is used conveniently as a control test and
gives an indication of the uniformity of concrete from batch to batch.
APPARATUS
The apparatus for slump test consists of a metallic mould in the form of a frustum of a
cone with internal dimension as follow Bottom diameter = 20cm Top diameter = 10cm
Height = 30cm

PROCEDURE The internal surface of the mould is thoroughly cleaned and freed
from superfluous moisture and adherence of any old set concrete before commencing
the test. The mould is placed on a smooth, horizontal and non- absorbent surface. The
mould is filled with concrete in 3 equal layers. Each layer is tamped with 25 strokes
of tamping rod.
After the top layer has been tamped, the concrete is struck off level with a trowel and tamping
rod. Then, the mould is removed by lifting it slowly and carefully in a vertical direction. This
allows the concrete to subside. This subsidence is referred as slump of concrete.
